A Study on True Potato Seed (tps) Technology at Farm Level in Selected Areas in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted in Bogra and Munshigonj districts during 2001-2002 to see the adoption, profitability and constraints of potato production by TPS technology as well as comparison of adoption and profitability of potato production by TPS and HYV potato. On the basis of HYV potato area, TPS area was less than 1% in Bogra district but TPS technology was not found in Munshigonj. The study revealed that gross return, gross margin and benefit-cost ratio were higher in TPS technology compared to HYV potato were Bogra district. Again gross return, gross margin and benefit cost ratio of HYV potato were Bogra district. Again gross return, gross margin and benefit cost ratio of HYV potato were higher in Munshigonj district than Bogra due to better management and fertile land in the area. The reasons for not producing potato by TPS by the farmers in Munshigonj were tuberlet production needs to pay more attention and labour, potato productivity by HYV seeds and tuberlet were not significantly difference and lower storage capacity. The farmers of TPS technology were facing several problems like non-availability of TPS problems of tuberlet production, high cost of TPS and lack of proper training.

Objectives:

i. To ascertain the adoption of TPS technology in the study areas

ii. To find the input use, cost and yield of tuberlet production by TPS

iii. To compare the inputs use and productivity by HYV potato and tuberlets

iv. To find out the constraints of potato production by TPS.

Methodology:

The study was conducted in Bogra and Munshigonj districts where potato is grown intensively. Shipgonj and Sadar thana from Bogra, and Tongipara and Sadar from Munshiganj were selected for the study. From Bogra, a total of 40 farmers taking 20 from each thana from TPS and 20 from HYV potato were selected for the study. From Munshiganj, data were collected from 40 HYV potato farmers those who cultivated potato by TPS technology before 2000. Finally, a total of 120 farmers were interviewed from two districts. Stratified random sampling procedure was used for selecting the samples. The data were collected with the pre-tested interview schedules by the researchers and two field investigators during 2001-2002. The collected data were edited, summarized, tabulated and analyzed to fulfill the objectives of the study. Tabular and statistical methods of analysis were followed in the study.

Achievement/Findings:

Potato production by TPS technology, growth rate of area was 1%, production was 3% and yield was 2%. In Bogra, per-hectare yield of potato by TPS technology (19531Kg) was higher than the yield of HYV potato (17235Kg). Per hectare yield of potato was lower in the year 2001-2002 than the earlier year (2000-2001) due to rainfall and late planting. Gross return, gross margin and net return were higher in potato production by TPS technology than potato production by HYV potato seed. On the basis of full cost and cash cost basis, the benefit cost ratio was 1.83 and 2.20 potato production by TPS technology while it was 1.48 and 1.73 for potato production HYV potato seed. The farmers of TPS technology were facing several problems like non-availability of TPS problems of tuberlet production, high cost of TPS and lack of proper training.
