Preparation of Land and Soil Resource Utilization Guide, Chandina

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Chandina Upazila lies between 23o21' & 23o31' north latitude and 90o51' & 91o04' east longitude covering an area of 20,193ha. It lies in the physiographic unit of Old Meghna Estuarine Floodplain. The Upazila comprises of 13 union and 1 municipality having a population of 3,05,820 (2001). Four land types namely highland, medium highland, medium lowland and lowland were identified. The textural classes were loam, clay loam and clay. Three soil groups namely Chandina, Debidwar and Burichong were identified. Twenty cropping patterns were recorded in the Upazila. Eighty three soil samples were collected and analysed in the laboratory. It was found that P, K and B was deficient in some places on highland; K, S and Zn was deficient in medium highland soils; P, B and Zn was deficient in medium lowland; P, S, B and Zn was deficient in lowland soils. It was observed that Rabi crops (wheat, maize, millet), rabi vegetables, pulses; annual crops like sugarcane, pineapple, banana and fruit trees like mango, jackfruit, cocoanut can be successfully cultivated in the Upazila. Chandian Upazila was first surveyed in 1985 and updated survey was conducted in 2003.

Methodology:

Field survey was conducted on the basis of semi-detailed soil survey method. Interpretative soil and landform map was prepared using 1:50,000 aerial photographs. Soils were investigated following a catena and composite topsoil samples were collected. The sampling frequency was 1 sample for every 200ha. During survey data on crops, cropping patterns, soil and fertilizer management were collected for each checking points by interviewing the farmers'. Soil samples were analyzed in the laboratory for fertility assessment. Crop suitability for each land type and soil was determined. Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops was made. After compiling physical and chemical data sets the land and soil resource utilization guide was prepared with soil and landform map.

Chandina Upazila is situated in the western part of Comilla district. It lies under AEZ 19 (Old Meghna Estuarine Floodplain). In this upazila major land types identified were medium highland comprising 51% of total area followed by medium lowland comprising 30% of total area. Major textural class was loam covering 49% of the area followed by clay loam (28%). Three soil groups were identified of which Chandina and Debidwar covers major area irrespective of land type. According to local agro-ecology suitable crops identified were Rabi maize, cotton, groundnut; mustard, cabbage, cauliflower, potato, lentil, chickpea, watermelon, Boro (modern, local), Deep water aman, jute, T. Amn (modern, local), sugarcane, pineapple, banana, mango, jackfruit, cocoanut. Moderately suitable crops were millet, wheat, Rabi sorgum, tomato, onion, turmeric, Kharif cotton, Kharif and Rabi soybean, Kharif maize, Kharif groundnut, Chilli. Twenty cropping patterns are recorded of which Boro-T.Aus-T.Aman; Rabi crops-mixed Aus and B. Aman; Rabi vegetables-Boro- T.Aus-T.Aman; Rabi crops-Boro- T.Aus-T.Aman and Boro-Fallow-Fallow cropping patterns covered major area. Fertilizer recommendations for suitable crops are given in the guide based on soil test results. The guide can also be used for determining flood, drought, river bank erosion prone area. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer and local level development planning can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resources carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficiet or surplus area of the upazila.
