Sampling Technique of Farm Level for Memory Recall Survey Data on Crop Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

It was initiated in Boro 2002. Data collection continued up to June 2003. Initially two hundred farmers were identified at least one of whose land parcel was planted with Boro rice in 2002 from three villages Ghuni, Salanka and Chatipara of Kalihati Upazila under Tangail District. The villages were selected in consultation with the Upazila Agricultural Extension personnel of Kalihati Upazila where there was relatively less intervention in terms of farm survey. From the identified farmers, a random sample of 100 farmers was selected. The selected sample farmers were interviewed in five sampling dates viz. June 2002, September 2002, December 2002, March 2003 and June 2003. In June 2002 all 100 farmers were interviewed within 15 days of Boro harvest. Data were collected on various inputs and yield. In the subsequent dates separate group of farmers out of 100 were interviewed. In the subsequent dates, the interviewed farmers were 22 in September 2002, 30 in December 2002, 26 in March 2003 and 22 in June 2003.

Objectives:

To determine the maximum time lag for collection of farm level memory recall data on crop production

Methodology:

At the beginning of Boro 2002 planting more than 200 farmers were identified in three adjacent villages of Kalihati Upazill under Tangail District at least one of whose land parcel was planted with Boro rice. The villages were selected in consultation of Upazilla Agriculture Office where the farm survey activities in the past was nil or minimum. From the identified farmers, a stratified random sample of 150 farmers will be selected. The criteria of stratification will be farming experience or age of the farmers and each selected farmer will be given an ID number. The sampling will be made in seven occasions as in Table below. At the beginning and at the end 3-4 persons will interview all 150 farmers. In other occasions, only 30 farmers will be interviewed. Arrangement will be made such that one interviewer meets a farmer only once during the process of survey. The farmers will be interviewed on the input use, management practices and yield in a particular parcel growing Boro rice through a questionnaire. The farmers will be interviewed as per following scheme:

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed that the average yield was close to 6 t/ha. (ranged from 5.94 – 6.30 t/ha) for all four groups of farmers interviewed in June 2002. The coefficient of variation (CV) of yield ranged 13 – 17% in June 2003 interview that ranged from 14.98% to 34.94%, the lowest being for the group interviewed in September 2002 followed by for the group interviewed in June 2003 (32.27%). The coefficient of variation (CV) for the group interviewed in September 2002 was 14.98% against the corresponding value of 15.09% in June 2003. For other group’s i.e, the groups interviewed in December 2002 and later, the coefficient of variation increased tremendously more than 30%. On the other hand, the range of yield for group of farmers interviewed in June and September was very similar and that in other cases was quite large, the minimum being far below the minimum reported in June 2002. Regarding other variables, the results showed that the variation in the average value as well as the coefficient of variation was relatively less than those of yield. It was found that the coefficient of variation did not show any consistent trend over the sampling date-both average CV% of most of the variables showed ups and down. The results indicated that collection of data on rice yield from the farmers to be reliable should be within 3-4 months after the crop harvest. However, information on many other variables such as inputs may be collected even at a time-lag of one year after crop harvest without loss of precision.
