A field experiment on weed management in maize was carried out at farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur during rabi season of 2007-2008 to study the influence of edible podded pea intercropping on weed suppression in hybrid maize field. The minimum weed biomass (32.8 g/m2) and the maximum weed control efficiency (82%) was observed in maize-pea intercropping with weeding at 20 and 35 DAE. Yield and yield contributing characters of maize were significantly influenced by maize-pea intercropping and weed control methods. Sole hybrid maize with weeding at 20 and 35 DAE and earthing up gave the highest (8.00 t/ha) grain yield which was statistically identical with the treatment maize- pea intercropping with weeding at 20 and 35 DAE. The maximum benefit cost ratio (3.33) was obtained from maize - pea intercropping with weeding at 20 and 35 DAE. The maximum net return (Tk129510/ha) was also recorded from the same treatment.

To study the influence of edible podded pea intercropping on weed suppression in hybrid maize field.

The experiment was conducted at the Central Research Station Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2007-2008. There were six treatments viz.T1 = Sole hybrid maize (75 cm x 25cm) + no weeding + no earthing up, T2 = Sole hybrid maize +weeding at 20 & 35 DAE +earthing up, T3 = Maize + pea + no weeding, T4 = Maize + pea+ weeding at 20 DAE, T5 = Maize + pea + weeding at 35 DAE and T6 = Maize + pea+ weeding at 20 & 35 DAE. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Inter row spacing was 75 cm in maize with two rows of pea in between two rows of maize. Plant to plant distance was 25 cm for maize. Spacing of pea was 30 cm x 10 cm. The variety of maize was Pacific 984 and pea was BARI motorshuti 1. Seeds were sown on 11 November 2007. The unit plot size was 4.5m x 4.5m. Fertilizers were applied 250-55-110-55-8 N-P-K-S-Zn kg/ha in the form of Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum and Zinc Sulphate, respectively. One third of N, full amount of TSP, MOP, Gypsum, Zinc Sulphate and cowdung (5t/ha) were applied as basal in all plots. Urea was applied in two equal split at 35 and 65 DAE in maize (sole and intercrop). A light irrigation by sprinkler was given to the field for uniform emergence. Subsequently three irrigation were provided to the crop at 35, 65 and 90 DAE. Green pods of BARI motorshuti -1 were harvested at 65 and 80 DAS and maize was harvested at 155 DAS. Data as weed biomass (dry wt.) per sq meter, number and kinds of weed species were also recorded from each plot at 25, 35 and 50 DAE. Weed control efficiency (WCE) was calculated according to Varshney (1999) using following formula: WCE (%) = (A-B)A X 100 where, A = Dry weight of weeds in no weeding plots and B = Dry weight of weeds in treated plots. Yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and analyzed statistically
