Effect of Sowing Time on Growth Stage, Duration and Yield of Hybrid Maize

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur and RARS Jessore during two successive rabi seasons (2006-08) to study the effect of sowing time on growth stage, crop duration and yield of hybrid maize. Three sowing dates (Nov-30, Dec.15 and Dec. 30) and three maize varieties (BARI hybrid maize-3, BARI hybrid maize-5 and Pacific-11) were evaluated in the present study. Sowing time showed significant influence on grain yield at both the locations. Variety did not show any significant influence on grain yield in Joydebpur. But at Jessore, Pacific11 performed better than other varieties. Crop growth duration and reproductive stage of November 30 sown crops was longer than December sown crop. The highest grain yield was obtained from November 30 sown and the lowest from December 30 sown crop at both the locations. Beyond November 30 sown, yield was reduced by about 10-15% at Jodebpur and 19-26% at Jessore over years.

Objectives:

To evaluate the yield of hybrid maize varieties under three sowing dates in rabi season.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Farm of Central Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI), Joydebpur, Gazipur and RARS Jessore during rabi season of 2006-2007 and 2007-08. Three sowing times viz., November 30, December 15 and December 30 and three maize varieties viz., BARI hybrid maize-3 (BHM3), BARI hybrid maize-5 (BHM5) and Pacific-11 were tested in a randomized complete block design (factorial) with three replications. The unit plot size was 6 m x 5 m. Maize seeds were sown according to treatments with the spacing of 75 cm x 25 cm. The experimental plot was prepared and leveled properly before sowing. Fertilizers at the rate of 250-55-110-40 kg/ha of N, P, K and S were applied in the form of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MOP) and gypsum, respectively. The full amount of TSP, MOP, Gypsum, and 1/3 rd of urea were applied as basal during final land preparation. The remaining 2/3 of urea was side dressed at 35 and 70 days after emergence. Weeding, irrigation, and insecticide spraying were done as and when necessary to maintain an optimum growth condition for the crop. In 2006-2007 the November 30 sown crop was harvested at 150 days after sowing (DAS) while December 15 and December 30 sown were harvested at 145 and 137 DAS, respectively. In 2007-2008 the first-sown crop was harvested at 149 DAS while 2nd and 3rd sown were harvested at 146 and 136 DAS, respectively. Yield component data were collected from 10 randomly selected plants in each plot and yield was recorded plot wise. The data were analyzed statistically and mean separation was done by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Results over locations revealed that maize sowing beyond November 30 might reduce grain yield by 10-26 % with a reduced reproductive stage.
