Integrated Weed Management Practices for Hybrid Maize in Kharif Season

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This experiment was conducted at the research field of On Farm Research Division, Alamnagar, Rangpur and Breeder Seed Production Farm, Debigonj during kharif season of 2007. Six weed management methods including untreated control were used as treatment variables. . Better cost effective weed control efficiency was observed when pre-emergence herbicide (Magnum gold) + Earthing up at 30 DAE was followed in both the locations. the highest seed yield (7.47 t/ha and 7.98 t/ha in Debigonj) were recorded in treatment T₄which were weeded twice through spading at 10 and 20 DAE. Higher yield from T₄ might be due to its better yield components like higher number of seeds/cob and 1000-grain weight. The highest net return (Tk. 39323/ha in Rangpur and Tk. 44385/ha in Debigonj) and BCR (2.11 in Rangpur and 2.27 in Debigonj) were obtained from the treatment T₅ where pre-emergence herbicide was applied followed by earthing up was done at 30 DAE.

Objectives:

To find out proper weed control methods for hybrid maize in kharif season

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted at the research field of On Farm Research Division, Rangpur and Breeder Seed Production Farm, Debigonj during kharif season of 2007. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Six weed management methods including untreated control were used as treatment variables. The treatments were T₁ ) Control, T₂) No weeding + Earthing up at 30 DAE T₃) Spading along with hand weeding at 20 DAE + Earthing at 30 DAE, T₄) Two spading along with hand weeding at 10 and 20 DAE + Earthing up at 30 DAE, T₅) Pre-emergence herbicide (Magnum gold @ 2 ml/L water) + Earthing up at 30 DAE and T₆) Post-emergence herbicide (U-46 @ 6 ml/L water) at 20 DAE + Earthing up at 30 DAE . Fertilizers at the rate of 250-50-110-45-5-1 kg ha-1 N P K S Zn B were applied as Urea, TSP and MOP, Gypsum, Zinc Sulphate and Boric acid, respectively. One third of the urea and all others fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. Seeds of maize (cv. BARI Hybrid Maize 5) were sown on 6 March, 2007 in Debigonj and 7 March, 2007 in Rangpur with maintaining 75 cm X 25 cm spacing. Remaining 2/3 Urea were top-dressed in two equal splits at 30 and 60 DAE followed by irrigation. A light irrigation by sprinkler was given after sowing for uniform emergence of the crop. Weed samples were collected using 50cm x 50cm quadrate from randomly selected two places from each plot at 10 DAE, 20 days and 30 days after emergence. Number and dry weight of weeds were recorded. Weed control efficiency (WCE) was calculated according to Varshney (1999) using following formula: WCE (%) = (A-B/A) x 100 where A = Dry weight of weeds in no weeding plots and B = Dry weight of weeds in treated plots. The crop was harvested at 19 June, 2007 in Debigonj and 23 June, 2007 in Rangpur. Yield and yield contributing characters were recorded and analyzed statistically and mean separations were done by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

It may be concluded that pre-emergence application of herbicide Magnum gold followed by earthing up at 30 days after emergence would be economic for getting economic seed yield of maize in both Rangpur and Debigonj locations.
