Response of Garlic (allium Sativum L.) Varieties to Sulphur Fertilizer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Field experiments were conducted at Shibgonj and Joydebpur of Spices Research Centre, Bogra and Regional Spices Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during winter season of 2007-2008. Sulphur was added along with a blanket dose of 150 kg N, 50 kg P, 100 kg K, 5 kg Zn, 2 kg B/ha plus 5 ton cowdung/ha. Yield of the four garlic varieties responded significantly and the highest yields were obtained from BARI Rashun-1 at Joydebpur and BAU Rashun-1, BARI Rashun-2 and BAU Rashun-2 at Bogra. Application of S tended to increase yield and yield attributes of garlic varieties linearly up to 40 kg S/ha and thereafter the yield response was quadratic in nature in both the locations. The maximum estimated yield of BARI Rashun-1 was 7.69 t/ha at 53.0 kg S/ha, BARI Rashun-2 was 7.46 t/ha at 57.0 kg S/ha, BAU Rashun-1 was 6.86 t/ha at 58.3 kg S/ha and BAU Rashun-2 was 7.04 t/ha at 56.2 kg S/ha at Joydebpur, while at Bogra, it was 7.97 t/ha at 50.3 kg S/ha for BARI Rashun-1, 8.33 t/ha at 41.1 kg S/ha for BARI Rashun-2, 8.22 t/ha at 44.0 kg S/ha for BAU Rashun-1 and 8.10 t/ha at 43.1 kg S/ha for BAU Rashun-2.

Objectives:

To study the response of garlic varieties to sulphur application in presence of N, P, K, Zn and B in Grey Terrace soil under AEZ-28 of Jaydebpur (Gazipur) and AEZ-25 of Shibgonj (Bogra)

Methodology:

Field experiments were conducted at the research stations of Spices Research Centre and Regional Spices Research Centre, BARI at Shibgonj and Joydebur, Gazipur during winter season of 2007-2008. Fertilizers at the rate of 150 kg N from urea, 50 kg P from triple super phosphate (TSP), 100 kg K from muriate of potash (MoP), 5 kg Zn from zinc oxide, 2 kg B from boric acid and cowdung 5 t/ha were used as blanket dose in the locations. Sulphur was applied through gypsum as per treatment. Full dose of each of TSP, MoP, gypsum, zinc oxide, boric acid, cowdung and 1/3rd urea were applied at final land preparation. Cloves of garlic varieties were sown on 8 November, 2007 at Joydebpur and 4 November, 2007 at Bogra at a spacing of 20 cm x 10 cm. The remaining 2/3rd urea were applied in two equal installments at 21 and 42 days after sowing. Intercultural operations such as irrigation, weeding, mulching, etc. were done as and when required. The yield attributes and yield data were compared by Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

The maximum estimated yield and optimum sulphur rate of BARI Rashun-1 was 7.69 t/ha at 53.0 kg S/ha, BARI Rashun-2 was 7.46 t/ha at 57.0 kg S/ ha, BAU Rashun-1 was 6.86 t/ha at 58.3 kg S/ ha and BAU Rashun-2 was 7.03 t/ha at 56.2 kg S/ha at Joydebpur. On the contrary, 7.97 t/ha at 50.3 kg S/ha for BARI Rashun-1, 8.33 t/ha at 41.1 kg S/ha for BARI Rashun-2, 8.22 t/ha at 44.0 kg S/ha and 8.10 t/ha at 43.1 kg S/ha at Bogra. The R2 value (0.83-0.89 at Joydebpur) and (0.94-0.99 at Bogra) indicated that 83-99% of total variation in yield was attributed to the application of sulphur. The investigation indicated that application of 53.0 kg S/ha for BARI Rashun-1, 57.0 kg S/ha for BARI Rashun-2, 58.3 kg S/ha for BAU Rashun-1 and 56.2 kg S/ha for BAU Rashun-2 at Joydebpur, while at Bogra, 50.3 kg S/ha for BARI Rashun-1, 41.1 kg S/ha for BARI Rashun-2, 44.0 kg S/ha for BAU Rashun-1 and 43.1 kg S/ha for BAU Rashun-2 along with a blanket dose of N P K Zn B might be optimum for maximizing the yield of garlic.
