Development of Mouza Level Digital Databases and Maps of Major Potato Growing Areas

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted during 2011-12 using both primary and secondary data to build the mouza level digital database and maps of potato. Primary data were collected from potato growers of three upazilas, namely Gazaria (Munshigonj), Shibganj (Bogra) and Pirganj (Rangpur). Mouza, union, upazila, district and country level digitized maps were utilized in the program. GIS, GPS, MIS, Modem and mobile phone Technology were used. Average yield of potato was17.45t/ha and the highest yield was 29.88 t/ha at Gazaria, Munshigan. Out of total potato area 69.06% was cultivated by HYVs and the rest 30.94% by local varieties. Out of 46 HYVs developed by BARI, 6, 7 and 8 varieties were cultivated in the study areas Gazaria, Shibganj and Pirganj. Maximum eighty percent (80.41% ) area of HYVs potato was covered by three varieties Diamant, Cardina and Granola. Production cost and selling price were Tk.7.25 /kg and Tk.10.48 /kg at the time of harvest, respectively in 2012. Benefit Cost Ratio (BCR) of potato was 1.45 whereas maximum BCR was 1.46 at Shibganj.

Objectives:

1) To build union level digital databases and maps of potato

2) To determine variety wise area coverage of potato in block, union, upazila and district

3) To identify problems and prospects of potato cultivation in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

This is the report of 1st year research work out of three years research program (2011-14). The study was done at Gazaria, Shibganj and Pirganj upazilas of Munshiganj, Bogra and Rangpur districts during 2011-12. These sites were selected purposively. Simple random sample procedure were followed for data collection and complete enumeration of different varieties of potato were taken for whole population. Data were collected from primary and secondary sources. Secondary sources were NGOs and government organizations such as Soil Resources Development Institute (SRDI), Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), and Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) as well as international organization like Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). Statistical package program such as Excel, SPSS and MS word were used in the study in addition to Arc View (GIS) program. Digitized maps of union, upazila, district and country were utilized in this study
