Intercropping Chili with Garlic at Varying Plant Population

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An intercropping experiment on chili and garlic was conducted during rabi 2007-08 at the farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) Joydebpur, Gazipur to find out suitable intercrop combinations for higher profitability and economic return. Cent percent garlic combined with 66, 53, 33 and 26% chilli constituted the intercrop combinations. Significantly the highest garlic (6.31 t/ha) and chili yield 8.50 t/ha) were obtained from their respective sole crops. Garlic yield was reduced (6-16%) due to intercropping which was compensated by the chilli yield. However, land equivalent ratio (LER) of the intercropping combination was higher than sole crop. The highest GEY (8.2 t/ha) was obtained from 100% garlic + 53% chilli. This treatment also gave the highest LER (1.78), gross return (Tk 492000/ha) net return (Tk 417470/ha) and benefit cost ratio (5.60).

Objectives:

To find out the optimum plant population of chilli in association with garlic for higher productivity.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during the rabi season of 2007-2008 at the Spices Research Sub Centre, Gazipur. Six treatments combinations were tested in randomized complete block design with three replications. These were T₁= Sole Garlic (20 cm x 10 cm), T₂ = Sole Chili (50 cm x 40 cm),T₃ =100% garlic (20cm x 10cm) + 66.66% chili (60 cm x 40cm), T₄ =100 % garlic + 53.33% chilli (60 cm x 50cm), T₅ =100 % garlic + 33.33% chili (60 cm x 80cm), T₆ = 100 % garlic + 26.66% chili (60 cm x 100cm) .The unit plot size was 3.0 m x 4 m. Sole chilli was sown in 50 cm apart lines maintaining plant to plant spacing 40 cm. Sole garlic was sown in 20 cm apart lines with 10 cm plant to plant spacing. The 35 days old seedlings of chilli (BARI morich 1) were transplanted on 12 November 2007. The cloves of garlic (BARI Rasun 1) were sown on 12 November 2007. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 100-50-170-20 NPKS kg/ha for garlic and 95-65-100-20 NPKS kg/ha for sole chili in the form of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MOP) and gypsum. One half of N and MOP, full amount of TSP and Gypsum were applied as basal in all the plots except chili sole plot. Two split application of urea & MOP was done at 25 and 50 days after transplanting (DAP) in garlic plots (sole and intercrop). At the time of final land preparation one half of N urea and MoP, full amount of TSP and gypsum were broadcast and remaining urea and MOP were applied in two equal splits at 20 and 45 days after transplanting (DAP) for sole chilli. Cowdung (5 t/ha) were applied as basal in the plots. Intercultural operations like weeding, irrigation, plant protection measures were provided to both the crops as and when necessary. Chilli was harvested five times at 15 days interval starting from 23 Feb,2008. Garlic was harvested on 24 March 2008. Garlic and chili were harvested as whole plot basis. At harvest, 10 randomly selected plants of each crop were uprooted for yield components. The collected data were analyzed statistically and the means were adjudged using LSD. Economic analysis and benefit cost ratio (BCR) were also computed.
