Comparative Study on the Properties of Knitted Chemically Modified Jute, Acrylic and Their Blended Sweater.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was carried out in the laboratory of Yarn and Fabric Production Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 1997. A study of properties of sweaters knitted with yarns of soft jute, acrylic and their blends was performed. The sweaters were made of chemically modified 100% jute, acrylic, different percentage of jute:polyester and jute:acrylic yarns. Finally all the properties of the knitted sweaters were studied. It is observed that the properties of soft jute-acrylic (80:20) blended sweaters as very similar to that of the 100% acrylic sweater and are softer than the soft 100% jute, jute-polyester (90:10), jute-polyester (80:20) and jute-polyester (70:30) blended sweater.

Objectives:

To Knit jumper with Novocel yarn (including blended yarn)and to compare their physical properties.

Methodology:

258.36gd tex (7.5lbs/spy) of 100% jute, jute:polyester (70:30, 80:20, & 90:10), 100% acrylic, jute:acrylic(80:20) blended yarn were collected. Then the above yarns, except 100% acrylic yarn were chemically modified by woollenisation, bleaching, dyeing and finishing. Finally the sweater were made with chemically modified yarn from a Knitting industry.Eighteen parameters of the knitted sweater were tested.These are-machine setting length, length after kmitting, feel during knitting, yarn breakage, physical feeling, Blending length, abrasion resistance, hydrocarbon, Health hazard, fastness properties. etc.

Achievement/Findings:

The softness of the knitted yarn plays important role on the properties of the sweater. The physico-mechanical and chemical properties, directly related to openness, such as transparency and air permeability, show a very good correlation with cover factor. Shrinkage of fabrics form the same type of yarn is also related to cover factor. Tightly knitted fabrics simply cannot shrink as loselt kitted fabrics. It is observed from the table that the properties of soft jute-acrylic (80:20) blended sweaters as very similar to that of the 100% acrylic sweater and are softer than the soft 100% jute, jute-polyester (90:10), jute-polyester (80:20) and jute-polyester (70:30) blended sweater. It is also seen from the table that the properties of 100% jute sweater requires more research and development work in order to improve its properties nearer to jute-acrylic (80:20) blended sweater. As the compactness of the sweaters plays a vital role on its properties, the various compact structures of the knitted sweaters would be made to improve the properties of the sweater.
