Seedling rising on floating bed is very popular practice among the farmers of the low lying areas of Barisal and Pirojpur districts. It is a self-innovative and labour oriented technology. In rainy season, the farmers collect and gather water hyacinth and Khuday pana and give size as rectangular form, which is locally as dol. The farmers prepare ‘mada’ like a small ball by Khuday pana and kanainala. Mada is being placed on dol with sprouting seed. After a certain period of time, this sprouting seed is suitable for transplanting. The farmers do not use any agricultural equipment to raise seedling in this method. The farmers get higher income by this seedling raising activities. The benefit cost ratios on cash cost basis for different vegetables namely bottlegourd, country bean, bittergourd, brinjal and tomato were near about 3. It indicated that seedling raise on floating bed was very much profitable in coordination with family labour in the study areas. To earn more profit, the farmers have to face some unwanted problems like natural hazards, scarcity of fund etc. Moreover, there are huge potentialities for seedling rising on floating bed in the areas.

i. To find seedling raising systems;

ii. To know the operation of practices of the system

iii. To find out the profitability of the system

iv. To identify the related constraints.

The study was conducted at Barisal and Pirojpur districts where the farmers adopted the system. Two Upazilas namely, Banaripara under Barisal district and Nazirpur under Pirojpur district were selected for this study. Farmers in the low lying areas prefer to raise seedling on floating beds because of the topography of land. Two villages, Danlbari dobra and Bisharkandi of Nazirpur and Banaripara Thana were selected respectively for data collection. Lists of the farmers who are growing seedlings on floating beds were collected from both the villages. A total of 80 farmers were selected for interview. Data were collected through survey method by a pre-designed and pre-tested interview schedules during the year 2001-2002. A single floating bed was considered as a unit of data collection of each farmer. Detailed information of the floating bed were collected and analyzed on per dol/hectare basis. In addition, system based analyses were also carried out to fulfill the objectives of the study.

The grand total cost for bottle gourd seedling raising in a season for on floating bed was Tk 1, 23,090. The grand total cost per hectare for country bean seedling raising in a season on floating bed was Tk 1, 43,583. The grand total cost per hectare for the seedling raising of bitter gourd in a season was Tk 1, 42,395. Seedling raising for brinjal in a season, the grand total cost per hectare was Tk 1, 23,090. The grand total cost per hectare for seedling raising of tomato for a season was Tk 1, 17,447. In case of all crops, the first time raising cost is the highest because of establishment the floating bed. The farmers prepared the bed and used the bed three times in a season. The farmers incurred higher cost and also got higher income from seedling raising. The gross returns for bottle gourd, country bean, bitter gourd, brinjal and tomato were Tk 1, 78,002, Tk 1, 95,162, Tk 1,51,701, Tk 2,43,474 and Tk 1,65,099 respectively. The gross margins for bottle gourd, country bean, bitter gourd, brinjal and tomato were Tk 54,912. Tk 51,579, Tk 9,306,Tk 1,20,384 and Tk 47,652 on full cost basis and Tk.1,08,372, Tk 1,13,256, Tk 70,488, Tk 1,57,674 and Tk 79,299 on cash cost, basis respectively. The gross return was highest in brinjal and lowest in the bitter gourd. The benefit cost ratios for bottle gourd, country bean, bitter gourd, brinjal and tomato were 1.45, 1.36, 1.07, 1.98 and 1.41 on full cost basis and 3.47, 3.20, 2.52, 3.68 and 2.74 on cash cost basis respectively. The study revealed that the floating bed system for seedling raising was a profitable and labour intensive enterprise. This practice can help in employment generation and poverty alleviation in the areas.
