Studies on Improved Production, Processing, Transport and Handling of Shrimp and Their Cost Benefits at Farm Level

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study revels that traditional and improved traditional shrimp farming are characterized annual yields of 160-226.5 kg/ha and 360.5-443.73 kg/ha respectively. Due to management shortfalls of traditional shrimp farming shows minimum yields. In investigated farm of Paikgacha, Shaymnagar and Rampal quantify the volume of post-harvest loss were reported 7.14%, 5.4% and 8.11% respectively. In contrast 4.48 % and 5.13% of the volume of post-harvest loss were estimated for Paikgach, Shaymnagar and Rampal region in improved traditional farm. Due to lack of sufficient ice during peak period of receiving shrimp, improper handling and lack of suitable transport facilities in time, it was reported the quantify the volume of post-harvest loss 2-14%, 1-12% and 3-14% in the depots of Paikgacha, Shaymnagar and Rampal region, respectively.

Objectives:

To identify the existing problems/shortfalls of shrimp farm management under different culture system, to collect detail information about transportation and marketing of farm produced shrimp and their cost benefits.

Methodology:

A detailed survey was conducted on existing shrimp farming in Paikgacha, Shamnanar, Rampal under Khulna, Satkhira and Bagerhat districts.

Achievement/Findings:

Due to this low grade products Bangladesh export trade sometimes sufferer heavy losses in the form of detention or rejection of a part or full consignment of frozen shrimp, the cancellation of contract or low price offered by foreign buyers. To provide commercial quality standard, safe, sound and wholesome shrimps product, it should be emphasized the quality of shrimp from farm level up to processing plant. Because the quality of finish product is mostly rely on its quality of raw materials.
