Catch Monitoring and Population Biology of Some Important Marine Species (mackerel and Tuna) in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Average total monthly catch (all species) in Cox's Bazar was estimated as about 865.1 t, whereas the total catch for mackerels and tunas in the Cox's Bazar region was about 7.20 t/month. The highest total catch (4,180.0 t) was observed in October, whereas the lowest catch (148.0 t) was observed in December. The highest catch of mackerels and tunas (136.0 t) was observed in November and the lowest in January. Among the mackerels, the highest catch (31.0 t/month) was contributed by the Kalo-maittya (Scomberomorus guttatus), whereas the lowest catch was observed for Surma-maittya (S. commersons). The single tuna species called, Bom-maittya (Eastern little tuna, Euthynnus affinis) contributed about 22.0 t/month. The percentage composition of the catch of mackerels and tuna and other major species/groups of fish showed that hilsa (Tenualosa ilisha) was the most dominant contributor in the marine catch composing of about 54.0% of the total marine catch in Cox's Bazar. In case of mackerels most mature fish were observed in October indicating its spawning season in that period. For the tuna (Bom-maittya) the most mature fish was observed in August indicating its spawning season in that month.

Objectives:

To monitor catch and landing of mackerels and tunas in Bangladesh; to study the important basic biology necessary for population study of the important mackerels and tunas in Bangladesh; to estimate population parameters necessary for stock assessment of the important mackerels and tunas; and to assess the exploitation level and resource abundance of the important mackerels and tunas in Bangladesh.

Methodology:

In Cox’s Bazar region, generally two types of boats are used for harvesting coastal resources. These are small and big size mechanized boats usually different in size, engine power and gear length. However, mesh size and mesh depth almost same for both categories. Generally, trip period varies between 5 and 7 days. During monsoon period trip duration was shorter compare to winter season. An approximate estimate of ‘catch per boat per trip’ was calculated based on total number of boat and their catch landed in the landing center. The landing data were collected mainly on 22 important commercial species on daily basis and then the monthly and annual landings were estimated from the daily records. Population parameters for commercially important mackerel and tuna fishes were studied.

Achievement/Findings:

The study will be able to assess the present status of the mackerel and tuna fisheries in Bangladesh. The study will also generate important biological information and important population parameters necessary for the stock assessment of the resources, which ultimately will be used for the formulation of a sound management policy for the proper utilization of the resources.
