Development of Technique for Breeding and Larval Rearing of Mud Crab (scylla Serrata)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Crabs production was between 16.55 and 17.17 kg/pond, an little higher production in treatment 2, where number of males were higher. After 70 days of rearing, all the female crabs became gravid but no crab became barried during this period. Generally gravid crab needs more than two months to become barried after copulation. Hence, the crabs were harvested from the ponds and were stocked in indoor cemented cisterns @ 2 crabs (1 male and 1 female) for further rearing.

Objectives:

To develop technique for induced breeding of mud crab; to determine suitable diet for the larval rearing of mud crab; and to produced seed of mud crab.

Methodology:

The stocked crabs were fed with minced tilapia @ 3.0% of the total crab biomass. Water temperature of the ponds varied around 24-30⁰C, water salinity was maintained within a range of 10-28 ppt, water pH varied between 7.25 and 8.50 and dissolved oxygen ranged from 3.0 to 6.0 mg/l. The crabs were observed periodically to check the development of their gonads. After 20 days of culture, development of gonads was observed in some crabs. After 70 days of culture, all the crabs were harvested by dewatering and the progress of development of gonads, growth and production of crabs were estimated.

Achievement/Findings:

The study will enrich scientific and practical knowledge about the reproductive biology of mud crab. Technique for breeding and larval rearing of mud crab, including determination of suitable feed and feeding ration for the larvae will be developed, which ultimately will serve as a prerequisite for the successful mass seed production and successful husbandry of the species.
