Integrated Management of Root Knot Nematode of Tomato with Nematicide and Organic Soil Amendment

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the pre plant soil treatment with nematicide and organic soil amendments to control root knot nematode of tomato. Root knot nematode (Meloidogyne spp) infested soils were treated with Furadan 5G, poultry refuse, mustard oil cake and their combination like poultry refuse+ Furadan 5G and mustard oil cake+ Furadan 5G. All treatment gave satisfactory reduction of gall development on roots and increased plant growth as well as yield of tomato. Among the treatments, poultry refuse alone and its combination with nematicide appeared to be the best amendments for root knot nematode reduction and improvement of plant growth as well as increased yield of tomato.

Objectives:

To evaluate the pre plant soil treatment with nematicide and organic soil amendments to control root knot nematode of tomato.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Rabi 2008-09, in the field of Plant Pathology division BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur. After final preparation of land, the field was divided into plots. Sufficient inocula of root-knot nematodes in the form of chopped galls roots of tomato were incorporated into the soils. The plot size was 3 m x 2 m. Thirty days old tomato seedlings var. Ratan, grown on sterilized soils was transplanted. There were 8 treatments viz. i) Control, ii) Furadan (F) 5G @ 40 kg/ha iii) Poultry refuse (PR) @ 5 t/ha iv) Poultry refuse @ 3 t/ha v) Poultry refuse @ 3 t/ha+ Furadan 5G @ 20 kg/ha vi) Mustard oil cake (MOC) @ 600 kg/ha vii) Mustard oil cake @ 300 kg/ha viii) Mustard oil cake @ 300 kg/ha+ Furadan 5G @ 20 kg/ha There were 3 replications and the design followed was RCBD. Application of treatments: Requisite quantity of fresh poultry refuse and mustard oil cake were added to the soil 3 weeks before seedling transplanting and allowed to decompose after incorporation with soil and kept 3 weeks for proper decomposition. Furadan 5G was added before seedling transplantation. Fertilizers were added during final land preparation, weeding and irrigation were done as and when necessary. Data collection: The following data were measured and recorded. Plant height (cm), Plant weight (gm), root length (cm), root weight (gm), gall index (0-10 scale) (Zeck, 1971) was recorded at 60 days after transplanting and at final harvesting , number of fruits/ 5 plants, fruits yield/ 5 plant and total fruit yield /plot (kg).
