Documentation and Mapping of Vegetables ( Brinjal, Tomato and Cucumber): an Application of GIS Technology

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The Study was conducted during 2005-2006 to document and mapping of vegetables in Bangladesh through the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology. Data for the present study were collected from Statistical Yearbooks of Bangladesh and DAE. Computer software's like Excel, SPSS, Arc-view and Arc-Info were used for documenting, mapping and analyzing the data. From the figures and maps of different vegetable crops, it was found that the area and production of Brinjal, Tomato, and Cucumber occupied the major share of vegetables in Bangladesh. The growth rate of area and production of Brinjal was found very high compared to other vegetables. Its area expansion should be intensified in the farmers' fields for its higher production and area increase.

Objectives:

i. To find out the documentation and mapping of Brinjal, Tomato and Cucumber

ii. To find out the statistical measurement and graph of these vegetables

iii. To find out the growth rate and yield gap of these vegetables.

Methodology:

Among the major vegetables, Brinjal, Tomato and cucumber were included in the study. Secondary and primary data was used in the study. Computer software’s like Excel, SPSS, Are-View, Are-info and other related measures were used for this purpose. Secondary data from BBS (1998, 2004) and other sources were used in the study. The boundary of the data was taken for last six years. Up-to-data were taken from the BBS office. GIS Center of BARI was used for mapping and documentation. District boundary map was digitized by using Are-Info program. The administrative boundaries of 21 districts were used for mapping of crops. Data wee converted into standard units (ha, tons). Data were classified into some classes on the basis of particular cultivated area of different vegetables. The area under each class (frequency) belong to each district was identified by tally marks. The growth rate calculation was done with the help of OLS Semi Log function other package programs such as MS-word, Power point may also be used.

Achievement/Findings:

The average area of brinjal in the last six years (1998-2004) was found 63.64 thousand ha (76% of the total area), tomato 15.47 thousand ha (18%), cucumber 4.91 thousand ha (6%). The average production of brinjal was found 380.73 thousand m.tons (76% of the total production), tomato 15.47 thousand ha (18%), cucumber 21.76 thousand ha(4%). The annual rate of change of area (4.9%) and production (4.8%) of brinjal were very high compared to the other. The rates of change of area of tomato were 3.8% and cucumber 4.7% and production were 3.2% and 4.2% respectively. The analysis indicated that prospect of brinjal cultivation in Bangladesh has very bright future. Also in comparative statement of tomato and cucumber, it was seen that area, production and yield of brinjal were increasing rapidly.
