Investigation on the Uses of Antibiotics and Chemicals in Shrimp Feeds in Hatcheries and Farms and the Occurrence and Prevention of Shrimp Diseases

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Total plate count (TPC) of bacteria in tank water samples from various hatcheries from Cox’s Bazar was around 103cfu/ml (ranged from 2.4x10³ to 8.7 x 10³cfu/ml . Vibrio count in these samples ranged from 2.3 x 102 to 6.2 x 10²cfu/ml). Bacterial levels in brooder shrimp (body surface) collected from different hatcheries. TPC of brooder shrimp's body surface ranged between 5.4x 10³ to 2.7x104cfu/cm² and Vibrio count was 1.3x 10² to 8.3x102cfu/cm². Highest shrimp production of 1038 kg/ha was achieved from the pond treated with calcium hypochlorite and was followed (854 kg/ha) by the pond fed with underground water. Disease was not observed in these two experimental ponds. Disease (white spot syndrome and external fouling) was observed in control ponds where normal seawater was used. During stocking, salinity of all the three ponds was around 15 ppt. White spot syndrome virus could not enter into the pond which was treated with calcium hypochlorite and the pond which was fed with ground water. As a result, successful harvest of shrimp was obtained from these two ponds.

Objectives:

To know the types of diseases and causes of mortality of shrimp brooders in hatcheries; to know the types of antibiotics and chemicals used in hatcheries; to reduce risk of shrimp diseases using treated/underground water; to train hatchery operators about harmful effects of antibiotics/chemicals; and to train shrimp farmers about shrimp health management.

Methodology:

Eight shrimp hatcheries from Copx’s Bazar were investigated for bacteriological count of brood shrimp and hatchery water sources. On the other hand, 6 cemented ponds were stocked @ 3-5 m² for rearing of shrimp (P. monodon) PL under different treatments. Two ponds were treated with 30 ppm calcium hypochlorite, 2 with underground water and rest 2 with normal sea water.

Achievement/Findings:

Disease diagnosis in hatcheries can save large number of shrimp post-larvae through effective management; knowing the causes can minimize serious mortality of shrimp brooders in hatcheries; knowing the types of antibiotics and chemicals used in hatcheries will be helpful to formulate strategy of its control; and using treated or underground water could be alternative way to reduce the risk of diseases through avoiding WSSV carriers and finally to get increased production.
