Effects of Agro-chemicals on Fish and Plankton

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In the laboratory, pyrethroied pesticides were highly toxic but in the field trial, it was found safe for fish at the recommended dose unless the pesticides were spread directly on the fishes. To see the residual effects of pesticide on zooplankton Fifanon 57 EC and Cyphanon 57 EC (organophosphorus) were conducted in the rice field. Before pesticides application Cyphanon 57 EC and Fifanon 57 EC, zooplankton density were 19,644 nos./l and 44,500 nos./l respectively. After 48 h of pesticide application zooplankton density were 1,500 and 4200 nos./l respectively and after 168 h of pesticide application, no zooplankton survived in the rice field. In a similarly effect of pesticide, rotenone on zooplankton was tested as well. Before rotenone application, zooplankton density was 14,500 nos./l. in the rice field. After 24, 48 and 72 h of pesticide application, zooplankton density stood around at 2,500, 500 and 0 nos./l respectively at the recommended dose. After 72 h of Rotenone application, there were no zooplankton in the rice field . However, at 1x1.5 RD(recommended dose), after 24 h of application there were not zooplankton in the rice field. In both cases, after 360 h of pesticide application zooplankton stated to regenerate again.

Objectives:

2. To identify the suitable pesticides, which are not hazardous for fish farming; and identify less toxic or apparently safe pesticides, which can be used in integrated paddy-cum-fish farming; and

3. To evaluate the residual level and effects of pesticides in fish tissue and aquatic environment

Methodology:

Toxic effects of pyretroied pesticides on fish were assessed in laboratory and in field conditions. In laboratory series of aquaria were used to the test the pesticides effect at recommended dose and double dose of recommended dose. Fry of Barbodes gonionotus was used as test animal. The efficacy of pesticides was evaluated by median lethal conc. ( LC₅₀). Water quality parameters like temp., pH, DO, CO₂were recorded during pesticide trial.

Achievement/Findings:

The pesticide like Adphan 50EC, Adtheion 50EC, Dimegro 40EC and 2,4 D-amain were found apparently safe to small fishes and could be use for paddy-cum-fish culture at their recommended doses. Pesticide have negative effect on breeding and hatching of fishes. Moreover, pesticide have also negative impact on zooplankton population survival of natural water bodies.
