Studies on the Weather Factors Influencing Development of Leaf Blight (a.brassicae, A. Brassicicola) of Mustard

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at RARS Jessore in RABI 2010-2011 to study the development of Alternaria leaf blight disease of four Mustard varieties Tori-7, BARI sarisha-9, BARI Sarisha-11 and BARI Sarisha-14. Tori-7 showed the highest no. of spot with the largest spot size in both siliqua and leaf, and BARI Sarisha-11 showed the lowest in all the cases. AUDPC is also the highest (1532) in Tori-7 and the lowest (943) in BARI Sarisha -11.

Objectives:

To study the influence of environmental factors on initiation of the disease and its successive development

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at RARS, Jessore at Rabi 2010-2011. The design used RCB with 3 replications. The plot size was 3X3 m2, with row to row distance 30cm and replication distance 1 m. Date of sowing was 8 Nov 2009. There were 4 treatments. T₁ = Tori-07, T₂ = BARI Sarisha-09, T₃ = BARI Sarisha-11, T₄ = BARI Sariaha-14. Recommended doses of fertilizers and inter cultural operations were applied as and when necessary. Five plants of each plot were selected and proper tagging was done for necessary diseases data collection. Data of % disease area was taken six times starting from first appearance of the disease symptom at seven days interval. Number of spots on leaves was counted from leaves of selected plants from each plot. Sizes of spots on leaves were measured at mm scale where single spots were selected from selected leaves of selected plants from each plot at three days interval up to coalescing of the spots. Achievement/Findings:

Tori -7 gave the highest number of spots per leaf and per siliqua which was 44spots/leaf and 13.17 spots/ siliqua respectively. BARI Sarisha-11 performs lowest number of spots in both case 15 spots/leaf and 6.66 spots/siliqua respectively. Incase of size of spots at leaf, first data was taken at 02.01.11. In that time BARI Sarisha -11 gave smallest size of spot 0.29 mm. At that time maximum temperature was 25.3 and minimum temperature was 7.9 with 95% relative humidity. At second date of observation both the temperature decreases with increase relative humidity, causes maximum increasing of spot size at BARI Sarisha-11, BARI Sarisha-14, Tori-7 and BARI Sarisha -9. Grdually increase of maximum temperature and decrease of minimum temperature occur at next two observation time, with gradual increasing of spot size in all the cases. Highest size of spot was found at Tori-7, 3.4 mm and lowest in BARI Sarisha-11, 2.22 mm at last date of observation. Data of spot size at siliqua were taken from 11.01.11 to 26.01.10. In that time lowest spot size was recorded from BARI Sarisha -09, 0.51 mm and highest was recorded from Tori-7,0.82 mm. Maximum and minimum temperature showed decreasing trend after that time with increasing tendency of spot size at second and third date of observation. Tori -7 gives largest spot of about 3.6 mm in size and BARI Sarisha-11 and BARI Sarisha 14 gives smallest sizes spot of about 1.93 mm. AUDPC were counted by using the data of % disease area where AUDPC is highest in Tori-7, (1532) and lowest BARI Sarisha-11 (943).
