Effect of Cultural Treatment for Controlling White Rot of Bush Bean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of different cultural options of intercropping system on disease incidence of white rot and yield of bush bean were studied at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during rabi season, 2010-2011. Among the six different intercropping options percent plant disease infections were lower in one row of bush bean intercropped with coriander or mustard. Higher as well as statistically similar yield was observed from two row of bush bean with intercropped arrangement. The system like tow rows of bush bean intercropped with coriander was found best considering all factors viz. disease incidence, yield and MBCR.

Objectives:

To evaluate cultural options for controlling Sclerotinia rot of bush bean.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at previously Sclerotinia infected field of ARS, Burirhat at Rangpur during rabi season, 2010-2011. BARI Bushbean-1 was sown for the trial. The unit plot size was 3m X 2 m and seeds were sown in the date of 31 October, 2010 . The crop was raised as per recommended agronomical practices. The experiment was carried out following Randomized Complete Block Design with three replications. Seven different intercrop arrangements viz. i) one row of bush bean with coriander, ii) two rows of bush bean with coriander, iii) broadcasting bush bean with coriander, iv) one row of bush bean with red amaranth, v) two rows of bush bean with red amaranth, vi) broadcasting bush bean with red amaranth vii) broadcast bush bean as control were conducted. Data on percent disease incidence and plot yield were recorded. The recorded data were analyzed statistically to find out the level of significance and the variations among respective data were compared following Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test (DMRT). For economic analysis, marginal benefit cost ratio (MBCR) was calculated with the ratio of gross return and additional treatment cost.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the six different intercropping options percent plant disease infections were lower in one row of bush bean intercropped with coriander or mustard. Highest plant infection (6.62%) was found in control plot. Incase of plot yield, highest yield of bush bean (7.35 kg) recorded from the plot of two rows of bush bean intercropped with red amaranth. Statistically similar yield was observed from two row of bush bean arrangement with both intercropped system. In case intercropped yield, higher plot yield such as 1.63 kg and 5.67 kg were recorded from one row of bush bean with coriander and red amaranth respectively. Considering economic view point higher gross returns 178333 tk/ha and were obtained from the plots of one row bush bean intercropped with coriander followed by two rows of bush bean with that of crop. Both the inter crop sets yielded higher gross return than control plot. In case of marginal benefit cost ratio (MBCR), highest (28.89) was noted from T₁ treatment (one row of bush bean intercropped with coriander) while the lowest was found from the control plot. Accounting only disease incidence, one row of bush bean intercropped with coriander or red amaranth was best. Considering all factors such as disease infections, yield and MBCR tow rows of bush bean intercropped with coriander was found best.
