Developmental Changes in the Dispensation of Free Amino Acids in the Haemolymph of Multivoltine and Bivoltine Races of Silkworm Bombyx Mori L.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Silkworm haemolymph contains proteins, free amino acids, salts, large amount of water and certain amount of pigments besides haemocytes. Study on the free amino acids present in the haemolymph of Bombyx mori L. has been made in different contexts by many authors (Yoshitake and Aruga 1950, Ishimori and Muto 1951, Koyanagi and Matsuaka 1954, Haque et al 1990). The changes in the haemolymph protein have also been reported by Fujii (1936) and Miyoshi (1959) in B.mori after infection with flacherie diseases. The comparative work in the distribution of amino acids in the haemolymph of different silkworm races in response to selection is not available. In this investigation an attempt has been made to compare the distribution of free amino acids in different larval developmental stages of different silkworm races.

Objectives:

To compare the distribution of free amino acids in different larval developmental stages of different silkworm races.

Methodology:

The present study on haemolymph of three races showed that type of free amino acids differ in the haemolymph of different developmental stages of silkworm races. In muolting stage, alanine, glycine, glutamine, aspartic acid, leucine, lysine, proline, serine, tyrosine and valine were detected in all the races; while arginine, cystine, glutamic acid and methionine were totally absent . Histidine and threonine were present in traces. Proline and valine were found in the 4th moult of Nistari. During feeding stages (3rd day of 4th instar) highest number of amino acids such as alanine, glycine, aspartic acid, histidine, leucine, lysine methionine, proline, serine and valine were detected in the bivoltine race (BV-P). Arginine, cystine, glutamic acid and threonine were totally absent. Methionine was found in all the races but tyrosine and valine were found in multivoltine only.

Achievement/Findings:

The difference in free amino acid distribution in haemolymph of different silkworm races revealed that the amino acids haemolymph play a dominant role and expressed very strongly in bivoltine than multivoltine races. The difference in the distribution of amino acids may be due to the effect of selection pressure on the physiology of protein metabolism in the silkworm races.
