Effect of Seed Size on Yield of Indigenous Potato Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during rabi season 2007-08 to find out suitable seed size for indigenous potato varieties for higher yield and economic return. Two seed size viz. S₁= 26-29mm, S₂ = 30-33mm with 3 varieties viz. V₁ = Lalpakri, V₂ = Shilbilati and V₃ = Hagrai were included in this experiment. The highest yield (28.33 t/ha) was recorded from the V₃ (Hagrai), which differed significantly with the other varieties. Number of tuber/hill, tuber weight/hill and yield showed significant variation due to seed size. Larger seed size S₂(30-33mm) produced highest number of tuber/hill (27.48), tuber weight/hill (269g) and yield (25.56 t/ha). Interaction of variety and seed size showed significant difference in stem/hill, number of tuber/hill, tuber weight/hill and yield. Significant highest yield (29.93 t/ha) was observed in variety Hagrai with larger seed size (30-33mm).

Objectives:

To find out a suitable seed size of indigenous potato varieties for higher yield .

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at ARS, Burirhat, Rangpur during rabi season, 2007-08. The soil of the experiment side was sandy loam having pH value around 5. The experimental design was Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 3 replications. Unit plot size was 3m x 3m. Seeds were planted on 12 November, 2007 in 50cm x 20cm. Three varieties i.e. Lalpakri, Shilbilati and Hagrai and two seed size i.e. 26-29mm and 30-33mm were used as treatment. Manures and fertilizers used were at the rate of 10 t/ha cowdung and 150-55-150-22-5-1 kg/ha N-P-K-S-Zn-B in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate, respectively. Half of urea and all other fertilizers were applied before final land preparation. The rest of urea was applied at 30 days after planting (DAP). Weeding, earthling up, irrigation and plant protection measures were taken uniformly to all plots. The crop was harvested at full maturity on 18 February 2008. Data on plant height, stem/hill, number of tuber/hill, weight of tuber/hill and yield were taken duly and analyzed using the Computer Programme Mstat and mean separation was done by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Larger seed size S₂ (30-33mm) gave higher yield in all varieties but variety Hagrai along with larger seed size (30-33mm) produced the significantly highest yield.
