Optimum Curing Condition for Fixation with Pigment Dyes for Jute Cotton Union Fabric .

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The research work was carried at Chemical Processing Department of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute in 1998. A continuous one-bath dyeing method was developed for jute cotton union fabric with Pigment dyes (Helizarine type of BASF product) applying pad-dry-cure technique at different temperatures (110⁰C,120⁰C,130⁰C,140⁰C and 150 ⁰C).The optimum condition was found out by determination of fastness properties as well as breaking strength. The optimum condition for dye fixation was found out. The fastness properties were found quite satisfactory by curing the fabric at 140 ⁰C.

Objectives:

To develop standard and economic commercial dyeing process for jute and jute-cotton union fabric applying pad-dye-cure technique in a single bath with Pigment dyes in order to find out the optimum curing Condition for fixation of dyes and the process thereby saves energy ,time, labour and gives high production.

Methodology:

Jute cotton union fabric was scoured and bleached by standard methods.The bleached fabric was then dyed with Helizarine Red BT conc.(BASF) type of a Pigment dye with a suitable recipe applying pad-dry-cure method. Recipe: Helizarine Red BT Conc.-50g/l Helizarine Binder UD -80g/l Lisapol N- 3g/l The fabric was padded with the above formulation, dried and cured at different temperature like 110⁰C,120⁰C,130⁰C,140⁰C and 150 ⁰C for 1 minute in order to find out the optimum condition for dye fixation.The dyed fabrics were tested for determination of washing, rubbing, light fastness and breaking strength .

Achievement/Findings:

The work has been taken to find out the optimum condition for dye fixation after dyeing the jute or jute-cotton union fabric with pigment dyestuff applying continuous pad-dry-cure technique at different temperatures.The optimum condition was found out by determination of fastness properties as well as breaking strength. The washing, rubbing and lightness attained maximum when cured the fabric at 140⁰C which is satisfactory. The loss of breaking strength of the fabric increased with the increase of curing temperature. In all respect the results are satisfactory at 140⁰C. This method has the advantage of running continuous production with low dye consumption with simple application technique, less waste water contamination, saving energy, time, water and labour employment and increase the production rate.So the method can be considered economically viable for commercial application and jute & jute-cotton union fabrics can be dyed by this continuous methods resulting very good fastness properties.
