Efficacy of New Fungicides in Controlling Cercospora Leaf Spot of Indian Spinach

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Different new fungicides namely More 720 WP (0.2%), Westzol 5 EC (0.1%), Till 250 EC (0.05%), Bendazim (0.2%), I-vit (0.2%), Bavistin 50 WP (0.15%) and Botanical (Neem leaf extract-20%) were tested against Cercospora leaf spot of Indian spinach under natural field condition. Among the fungicides and botanical I-vit (0.2%) is the best fungicide in reducing leaf spot disease and increasing yield of Indian spinach.

Objectives:

To control Cercospora leaf spot of Indian spinach

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal during 2010-2011. The experiment was laid out in a well-prepared land folloed by RCB design having 3 replications. The variety was locally cultivated variety. There were 8 treatments namely More 720 WP (0.2%), Westzol 5 EC (0.1%), Till 250 EC (0.05%), Bendazim (0.2%), I-vit (0.2%), Bavistin 50 WP (0.15%), Botanical (Neem leaf extract-20%), and control. Five sprays were given at an interval of 10 days while the first one was applied at the first appearance disease symptom. Disease data were recorded before every spray using 0-5 rating scale which developed by Mehta and Mondal (1978) as follows: 0= No infection 1= 10% leaf area infection 2= 11-30% leaf area infection 3= 31-50% leaf area infection 4= 51-70% leaf area infection 5= 71% and above leaf area infection Percent disease index (PDI) was computed from the final data. The data was analyzed statistically and means were separated by DMRT (Zaman et al. 1982). Percent disease index (PDI) was computed .

Achievement/Findings:

All fungicides had significant effect on reduction of percent disease index (PDI) and increasing plant growth as well as yield of Indian spinach compared to control. Among the fungicides, the lowest percent disease index (PDI) was recoded in I-vit (0.2%) treated plot followed by Tilt 250 EC @ 0.05%. In respect of yield and yield attributes, I-vit (0.2%) performed the best among the treatments.
