Maintenance of Sweet Potato Germplasm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Tuber Crops Research Centre (TCRC), BARI has collected a large number of sweet potato germplasm from home and abroad to see their performance in respect of yield and quality and also used in future breeding programs. The field gene bank is generally maintained by re-establishing the vines of sweet potato twice in a year using cutting directly from the old field in a propagation nursery.Following such methods a total of 310 accessions are maintaining as germplasm.

Objectives:

To maintain sweet potato germplasms for future use in breeding programmes

Methodology:

Tuber Crops Research Centre (TCRC), BARI has collected a large number of sweet potato germplasm from home and abroad to see their performance in respect of yield and quality and also used in future breeding programs. These germplasms were characterized based on CIP and IBPGRI descriptors. At present TCRC is maintaining 310 accessions of sweet potato in the field condition. The field gene bank is generally maintained by re-establishing the vines of sweet potato twice in a year using cutting directly from the old field in a propagation nursery. Plot size of each accession was according to the availability of vine. The whole field was planted only in alternate rows, leaving a row vacant to reduce the chances of vine intermingling among the accessions. Following such methods a total of 310 accessions are maintaining as germplasm.
