Incidence Pattern of Glh Species and Its Sex Composition in Rice Field and Light Trap.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five species of GLH Nephotettix virescens, N. nigropictus, N. malayanus, N. parvus and Nephotettix sp were recorded. Higher population of Nephotettix virescens was observed in seedbed and transplanted rice but the light trap catch was dominated by N. nigropictus throughout the year. Male of N. nigropictus dominated the population but the male dominations of N. virescens was observed only in T. Aman season.

Objectives:

To know incidence pattern, species composition and sex ratio of GLH in rice field and light trap.

Methodology:

The abundance, incidence pattern, species and sex composition of green leafhopper (GLH) in seedbed, rice field and light trap were studied at BRRI farm, Gazipur during Aus and T. Aman 2005. Weekly sampling (100 complete sweeps) was done from seedbed and rice field. The light trap catches of GLH were also collected once in a week on sampling dates. Collected GLH specimens were counted and identified up to species level.

Five species of GLH were recorded. These were Nephotettix virescens, N. nigropictus, N. malayanus, N. parvus and Nephotettix sp. The incidence pattern of some of the species is given below: Nephotettix virescens: The prevalence of N. virescens was very high in Aus seedbed. (61.4/week). The migration of N. virescens from seedbed to Aus transplanted field was minimal due to overlapping of Aus seedbed and transplanted rice. However, the light trap catches of N. virescens was lower than the N. nigropictus at that time. The population slightly increased both in T. Aman seed bed and transplanted T. Aman rice. Again light trap catches showed high incidence of N. nigropictus (12.2) than N. virescens (6.35) in T. Aman season. The sex ratio (female: male) of the insect in all the habitats showed that the female dominated over male except in T. Aman rice and light trap placed in T. Aman. Nephotettix nigropictus : The population of N. nigropictus was comparatively lower than the N. virescens. But N. nigropictus was the dominant species in light trap catches at that time. Less number of the species shifted from Aus seedbed to transplanted rice field. Less number of N. nigropictus was also observed in T. Aman seedbed and transplanted fields. Again the number increased in light trap like Aus season. The sex ratio in different habitat showed that male dominated over female except in Aus seedbed and light trap placed in T. Aman. Other species of GLH: Three other species of GLH were (N. malayanus, N. parvus and Nephotettix sp.) were also observed. Their population were comparatively lower in all the season and in all the habitats. Highest number of N. malayanus (5.6 /week) was observed in Aus seedbed . In light trap catches, both sexes of the three species were observed but the population of male was very less in number.
