Assessment of Soils and Land Type in Kapasia Upazila, Gazipur

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Kapasia upazila is characterized by only three land types, high land occupies about 46% of total upazila area followed by medium high land (37%). The rest of the area (17%) belongs to medium low land. In case of texture, soils of about 45% area is loamy, 26% clay and 23% clay loam. The interpolated surfaces of the soil parameters. Almost all soils of Kapasia is strongly acidic with a pH value ranging 4.5-5.5. The soils of Kapasia are medium to low in organic matter content. Almost entire upazila is low in N-content with some area having medium N-content located at different pocket areas of the upazila. Except for some pocket areas almost all Kapasia soils are suffering from severe P deficiency (< 7.5 µg/gm soil) . The K-content of whole of the Kapasia soils is very rich much above the critical level (0.12 meq/100gm soil. Except some areas located at the south, central and small pockets distributed throughout the upazila, the soils of Kapasia is quite rich in Zn. The whole of upazila soils is very rich in Fe content ranging 30 – 520 µg/gm soil, much higher than the critical level of 4 µg/gm soil.

Objectives:

The study was conducted to assess the physical and chemical parameters of land and soils of Kapasia upazila

Methodology:

Data on edaphic characters of land and soils ( Land type, Soil texture, Organic matter (OM), total nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), iron (Fe), sulfur (S), zinc (Zn ) and pH were extracted from Thana Nirdeshika published by SRDI. Geostatistical software GS+ and ArcView Spatial Analyst 3.2 were used to construct the surfaces of the soil parameters. The semi-variance indicated spatial dependency of soil parameters: Organic matter (OM), N, P, K, Fe, S, Zn and pH; but the nature as well as the extent of dependency was not the same for all parameters. For OM, S, and pH, the semi-variance was best explained by exponential model while, for N, P, K, Zn and Fe the semi-variance model was spherical as judged by high R² value and the lowest residual sum of squares(RSS).

Achievement/Findings:

The major land type of Kapasia upazila is medium high land to high dominated by loam and clay-loamy soils. The Kapasia soils are charcterized by very high iron content are strongly acidic and seriously deficient in organic matter, total nitrogen and phosphorus. Among other nutrients, the soils are relatively rich in potassium, sulphur and zinc.
