Test of Botanicals Against Brown Planthopper (bph) and Rice Hispa (rh)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Farmers of Bangladesh used chemical insecticides to control the pest brown planthopper (BPH) and rice hispa (RH). But the chemical insecticides are most costly and often create health hazards and environmental pollution. So, the experiment was conducted to know the efficacy of different botanicals against BPH and RH. Different plant parts of neem viz. 4% neem oil with 0.1% emulsifier, plain water extract of neem leaf (1:5 w/v) and hot water extract of dry neem leaf (1:10 w/v) were tested against BPH and rice hispa under field condition. The experiments were conducted in RCB with three replications and found that mortality of BPH was increased gradually at 72 hrs of spray of different treatments. The mortality of rice hispa was as high as 66% even at 24 hrs of spray(HAT) of 4% neem oil with 0.1% emulsifier and the mortality reached to 87% after 72 HAT. Extract of green neem leaf gave 53.17% mortality at 72 hrs of spray.

Objectives:

Methodology:

Effect of different plant parts of neem viz. 4% neem oil with 0.1% emulsifier, plain water extract of neem leaf (1:5 w/v) and hot water extract of dry neem leaf (1:10 w/v) were tested against BPH and rice hispa under field condition. To prepare plain water extract, fresh leaves were either cut into pieces or crushed and mixed with required amount of water. The test material-water ratio was 1: 5 w/v. For hot water extract, air-dried leaves were crushed/powdered and boiled in water for 5 minutes. The test material-water ratio was 1: 10 w/v. Diazinon 60EC @ 1.00 l/ha was used as treated control. The experiments were conducted in RCB with three replications. A large field planted with BR3 was divided into three blocks Each block was divided again to make a number unit plots measuring 5X3 m in size. Each treatment was assigned to a unit plot of each block. From each plot four hills were individually covered by a mylar cage and on each hill ten insects were released. The botanicals were sprayed at 45 DAT.

Achievement/Findings:

The mortality of BPH was quite low at 24 hrs of spray for all the treatments except Diazinon 60EC. However the mortality increased gradually at 72 hrs of spray. Highest mortality was obtained with 4% neem oil with 0.1% emulsifier. The rice hispa mortality was as high as 66% even at 24 hrs of spray of 4% neem oil with 0.1% emulsifier and the mortality reached to 87% after 72 hrs. Extract of green neem leaf gave 53.17% mortality at 72 hrs of spray.
