Evaluation of Different Concentration-combination of Neem Oil and an Emulsifier Against Rice Hispa

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Farmers of Bangladesh used chemical insecticides to control rice hispa (RH). But the chemical insecticides are most costly and often create health hazards and environmental pollution. So alternative eco-friendly products is needed to control this pest.. Different concentrations of neem oil (2-5%) with three different concentrations (0.1- 0.3%) of an emulsifier were tested in three individual experiments against rice hispa in green house study the efficacy of different concentration-combination of neem oil and an emulsifier against rice hispa. Highest mortality was obtained with 4% neem oil with 0.1% emulsifier. Neem oil (4%) along with 1% emulsifier achieved significantly higher mortality of rice hispa. Neem oil concentration ranging from 3-5% in combination with low (0.1%) concentration of emulsifier showed higher mortality of hispa. However, higher concentration of emulsifier reduced hispa mortality.

Methodology:

Different concentrations of neem oil (2-5%) with three different concentrations (0.1- 0.3%) of an emulsifier were tested in three individual experiments against rice hispa in green house. Three hills of BR3 were planted in a pot of 20 cm dia at equal distances. The pots were individually covered by mylar cages. Five pairs of adult hispa were released on each pot 24 hrs before spray. The experiments were designed in RCB with three replications, each pot being considered as a replication.

Achievement/Findings:

In the first experiment using 0.1% solution of emulsifier with different concentrations of neem oil indicated that mixing of this concentration of emulsifier with 3-5% concentrations of neem oil can cause 86-96% hispa mortality at 24 hrs of application. The mortality increased at 48 hrs but no further increase was observed at 72 hr after spray. The emulsifier with 0.2 and 0.3% concentration also showed a similar trend of rice hispa mortality with the increase of neem oil concentration. However, results of the three experiments showed that for a particular concentrations of neem oil, a higher concentration of emulsifier (0.2% or 0.3%) reduced the mortality of rice hispa. It indicates that a lower dose (0.1%) of emulsifier is required for a better control of rice hispa.
