Assessment of Rat Damage in Modern Rice Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to assess the rat damage in modern rice varieties at BRRI farm during T. Aus, T. Aman 2005 and Boro 2006 season and found that natural infestation of rat varied in different varieties in different seasons. The overall damage in BRRI farm was 3.15%. The rat damage was not directly related to the number of active burrow but it depended on the variety(s) and its stage. The field with BR10 and Nizershail were not damaged in T. Aman season although having active burrow(s) on the surrounding bunds. On the other hand, BR21, BR22 and BR26 were damaged without having any active burrows.

Objectives:

To assess the rat damage in modern rice varieties at BRRI farm

Methodology:

To assess the rat damage in MV rice varieties a study was conducted at BRRI farm during T. Aus, T. Aman 2005 and Boro 2006 season. At different locations of BRRI farm fields having active burrow (s) on bund or presence of damage were investigated for rat damage. A base line along the axis in the damaged field was established. Four lines were set perpendiculars to the base line in equal distance, running from the edge of the rice field to collect the 100 hill samples from the whole field. Each line was divided into 5 points i.e., edge of the field, 20% inside, 30% inside, 40% inside and center of field. At each point, 5 hills were assessed along a line that was parallel to the base line. The whole procedure was done separately in different field during reproductive (booting- ripening stage) phase of different varieties. Percent damage was calculated from cut and uncut tillers that were counted from 100 hills in a field. In addition the count of active burrow on bund was also recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Natural infestation of rat varied in different varieties in different seasons. In total 1400, 2200 and 1200 hills were observed in three seasons at reproductive phase of different varieties. The rat damages were 3.61%, 3.44% and 2.10% in these varieties during T Aus, T. Aman and Boro season respectively. The overall damage in BRRI farm was 3.15%. The number of active burrow(s) was counted from the surrounding bund of the selected rice fields. The rat damage was not directly related to the number of active burrow but it depended on the variety(s) and its stage. The field with BR10 and Nizershail were not damaged in T. Aman season although having active burrow(s) on the surrounding bunds. BR21, BR22, BR26 and some lines (T. Aman season) were damaged without having any active burrows i.e., those varieties were more preferred by rat from others to natural infestation.
