Planting Geometry and Fertilizer Management of Sweet Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at BARI farm Joydebpur and RARS Jessore during 2006-2007 to find out suitable plant spacing and fertilizer dose for getting maximum tuber yield of desirable size. Four planting geometry, viz., P1 = 45 cm x 15 cm; P2 = 45 cm x 30 cm; P3 = 60 cm x 15 cm; P4 = 60 cm x 30 cm (recommended) and four fertilizer doses, viz., F1= 100-50-125-15-1.5-1; F2 = 75-40-100-11-1-0.5 (recommended) ; F3 = 50-30-75-7-0.5-0.5; F4 = 25-20-50-3-0.5-0.5 kg/ha NPKSZnB were tested on sweet potato (BARI sp 6). At both the sites, single tuber weight increased towards wider spacing but tuber yield decreased. Single tuber weight and tuber yield also decreased towards lower fertilizer level at both the locations. The results revealed that 45 cm x 15 cm spacing along with 100-50-125-15-1.5-1 kg/ha NPKSZnB might be suitable for getting maximum yield of desired sized tubers at both the locations.

Objectives:

To find out suitable plant spacing and fertilizer dose for getting maximum tuber yield of desirable size.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BARI farm, Joydebpur and RARS Jessore during rabi season of 2006-2007. The soil of the experimental field of both the locations was low in organic matter and deficient in NPKSZnB. Four planting geometry, viz., P₁= 45 cm x 15 cm; P₂ = 45 cm x 30 cm; P₃ = 60 cm x 15 cm; P₄ = 60 cm x 30 cm (recommended) were accommodated in the main plot and four fertilizer doses, viz., F₁= 100-50-125-15-1.5-1; F₂ = 75-40-100-11-1-0.5 (recommended); F₃ = 50-30-75-7-0.5-0.5; F₄ = 25-20-50-3-0.5-0.5 kg/ha NPKSZnB in the sub plot. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 3.6 m x 4.8 m. Fertilizers were applied to sweet potato as per treatments. Half of N and full amount of PKSZnB in the form of urea, TSP, MoP, gypsum, zinc sulphate and boric acid were incorporated in to the soil during final land preparation. Vines of sweet potato (cv. BARI SP-6) were planted on November 11, 2006 at Joydebpur and November 13, 2006 at Jessore according to treatments. The remaining N was top dressed in two equal splits at 30 and 60 DAP followed by earthing up and irrigations. A light irrigation was given after planting for proper establishment of vines. Other irrigation was applied at 90 DAP. Two hand weeding were done at 20 and 40 DAP to keep the crop reasonably weed free. Plant population/m²at harvest was taken from randomly selected 3 places. Other yield components were taken from randomly selected 10 plants from each plot. Sweet potato was harvested on April 17, 2007 at Joydebpur and April 19, 2007 at Jessore. Tuber yields were taken from whole plot. Data on yield and yield components were analyzed statistically and the means were adjudged using LSD. Economic analysis was also done.

Achievement/Findings:

In both the sites, single tuber weight increased towards wider spacing but tuber yield decreased. Single tuber weight and tuber yield also decreased towards lower fertilizer level at both the locations. The results revealed that 45 cm x 15 cm spacing along with 100-50-125-15-1.5-1 kg/ha NPKSZnB might be suitable for getting maximum yield of desired sized tubers at both the locations.
