Studies on Weed Management in Chilli

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment on weed management in chili was carried out at the farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur during rabi season of 2006-07 to find out the critical period of weeding. Eleven treatments viz. weed free throughout growing period (T1), no weeding (T2), weed free up to 15 days after transplant (DAT) then weedy (T3), weed free up to 25 DAT then weedy (T4), weed free up to 35 DAT then weedy (T5), weedy up to 15 DAT then weed free (T6), weedy up to 25 DAT then weed free (T7), weedy up to 35 DAT then weed free (T8), Pre-emergence herbicide (Dual gold) spray at 0 DAT (T9), weeding by BARI weeder at 25 DAT (T10) and farmer’s practice (weeding at 25 + 50 +75 DAT) (T11) were tested in the present study. Yield and yield contributing characters of chilli were significantly influenced by different weed management practices. Pre-emergence application of Dual gold @ 2 litre/ha showed some detrimental effect on plant height and leaf color. Plant became stunted and leaf color turned to yellow. However the highest yield was recorded from weed free throughout growing period (T1) treatment and the lowest yield was recorded from no weeding (T2) treatment.

Objectives:

To find out the critical period and suitable weed management practice(s) in chilli field.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Central Research Station Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2006-07. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. There were eleven weed management methods viz. Weed free throughout growing period (T1), no weeding (T2), weed free up to 15 DAT then weedy (T3), weed free up to 25 DAT then weedy (T4), weed free up to 35 DAT then weedy (T5), weedy up to 15 DAT then weed free (T6), weedy up to 25 DAT then weed free (T7), weedy up to 35 DAT then weed free (T8), Pre-emergence herbicide (Dual gold) spray at O DAT (T9), weeding by BARI-weeder at 25 DAT (T10) and farmer’s practice (weeding at 25 + 50 +75 DAT) (T11). Seven times (15 + 25 + 50 + 75 + 100 + 125 + 150 DAT) weeding were done in T1 treatment. One time (at 15 DAT), two times (at 15 + 25 DAT), three times (at 15 + 25 + 35 DAT), five times (at 15 + 25 + 50 + 75 + 100 DAT), four times (at 25 + 50 + 75 + 100 DAT), four times (at 35 + 50 + 75 + 100 DAT) weeding were done in T3, T4, T5, T6, T7 and T8 treatments, respectively. There was no weeding in T9 treatment but herbicide dual gold was applied just before transplant of seedlings. One weeding was done by BARI-weeder in T10 treatment and three times (at 25+50+75 DAT) weeding were done in T11 treatment. The unit plot size was 2m x 2m. Fertilizers were applied 95-65-100-20 N-P-K-S kg/ha. One fourth of K and full doses of P, S were applied as basal. Remaining K and full doses of N were applied as top dress at 25, 50 and 70 DAT after irrigation. The chili variety BARI Morich-1 was used as test crop. The crop was transplanted on 6 December 2006 with maintaining 50 cm line to line and 40 cm plant to plant distance. The age of seedlings was 35 days. Ripen fruit was harvested. Five (5) times harvests were done at 15 days interval. Data on weed infestations, yield and yield contributing characters by different weed management practices were recorded and analyzed statistically.
