Integrated Weed Management Practices in Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out at the Tuber Crops Research Center, Munshigaonj research farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) during rabi season of 2005-06 and 2006-07 to find out the effective and economical integrated weed control method in potato. Chenopodium album and Amaranthus viridis were the major weed species in potato field. The weeds were found to reduce tuber yield to the extent of 39 percent. Mulching with herbicide spraying at 7 days after planting (DAP) followed by one time uprooting of weeds by hand at 25 DAP produced the highest tuber yield of 23.39t/ha in 2005-06 and 29.58 t/ha in 2006-07 and also found most effective in controlling weeds as compared to use of mulched plots. The maximum benefit cost ratio of ratio of 2.62 and 3.21 obtained from the same treatment.

Objectives:

To find out an effective and economical integrated weed control method in potato.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Tuber Crops Research Center, Munshigaonj research farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) during rabi season of 2005-06 and 2006-07. The land type was medium high and the soil was silty clay in texture, which belongs to Old Meghna Estuarine Floodplain soil (AEZ-19). Seven weed management methods including untreated control were used as treatment variables.The treatments were T1) Untreated control (weedy check), T2) Mulching by water hyacinth, T3) Mulching + one hand weeding (uprooting) at 25 days after planting (DAP), T4) Mulching + two hand weeding at 25 and 45 DAP, T5) Mulching + herbicide (Ronstar 25 EC @ 1ml/L water) spray at 7 DAP as post planting post emergence weed control, T6) Mulching + herbicide (Ronstar 25 EC @ 1ml/L water) spray at 7 DAP + weed uprooting at 25 DAP, T7) Weed free (weeding at 20, 40, 60 & 80 DAP). The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 4m x 3.0m. The potato variety diamant was used as the test crop. The potato whole tubers were planted on November 27 in 2005 and November 23 in 2006 with maintained the spacing of 60 cm x 25 cm. The crop was fertilized with 150-43-140-22 kg N-P-K and S per hectare. During the final land preparation full dose of P, K, S and 50% N were applied as basal. Remaining N was applied at 30 days after planting. Herbicide was applied at 7 days after planting through knapsack sprayer using 1000 liter water per hectare. Irrigation and plant protection measures were done as and when required. Data on weed population and their biomass were taken at 30 and 90 days of planting. Data on weed density and weed biomass were transformed by square root transformation method before analysis.
