Effect of Storage Duration on Quality of Silk Cocoon.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Silk cocoons after harvesting from the Montague are dried and then reeled to collect raw silk(silk yarn). The rearing of silkworm in Bangladesh is done only four times a year and as such the revelers are required to store cocoons often for months. The quality of silk cocoons and its raw silk content are known to degrade gradually during storage causing reduction in reliability, raw silk yield, and various quality characteristics. The present study was undertaken to study the effects of the duration of storage on a number of cocoon and raw silk characteristics of silkworm. With respect to length of filament and raw silk percentage, the season S1 was significantly better than the rest followed by S4, for reliability percentage and tenacity, the season S1 produced significantly highest performance followed by S2.

Objectives:

To study the effects of the duration of storage on a number of cocoon and raw silk characteristics of silkworm.

Methodology:

The silkworm race used was the traditional Nistari of Bombyx mori L. The reason for using this race was the fact that about 60-70% of silk cocoons produced in the country belongs to this race. Seven storage durations were used. Viz. 0 day (T0), 15 days (T1), 30 days (T2), 45 days (T3), 60 days (T4), 75 days (T5), and 90 days (T6). Freshly harvested cocoons were sun dried to the optimum degree and stored loose on a wooden rack in a warehouse at normal temperature and humidity. The cocoons were cooked in an open pan and reeled in a multi end machine (40 ends) at a speed of 80 rpm. There were three replications and 200 cocoons were reeled for each treatment, Observations were recorded on four characteristics namely (a) reliability (%), (b) Length of filament (m), (c) raw silk (%), and (d) tenacity (g/denier). The experiment was repeated four times during the four cocoon harvest seasons as follows: Season1 (November 86), Season 2 (March 87), Season 3 (June 87) and Season 4 (September 87). The analysis of variance for the four characteristics with respect to seven treatments and four seasons was calculated.

Achievement/Findings:

Highest significant variations were observed among both treatments and seasons for all the characteristics studied. The interactions between treatment x season were also highly significant for all the characteristics except for raw silk percentage and filament length. With respect to length of filament and raw silk percentage, the season S1 was significantly better than the rest followed by S4, for reliability percentage and tenacity, the season S1 produced significantly highest performance followed by S2. The results obtained in the present study suggest that silk cocoons dried properly and kept loose on a wooden rack under normal temperature and humidity may be stored for 30 days without significant degeneration of its quality and for 60 days with slight degeneration in filament length and raw silk percentage.
