Studies on Fiber Entities Extracted from Different Yarns Untreated and Modified.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eight samples of yarns of different counts from 2.1 lb/spindle approximately procured from Dhaka, Adamjee Jute Mills and Experimental Mills of BJRI were investigated during the year of 1982 in the Physics department of BJRI at standard room temperature and humidity conditions. From the difference of yarn mass at fracture zones and other than fracture zones it was observed that yarns other than fracture zones contained more jute but this accumulation of fibers along the yarn length other than fracture zones showed no regular trend with the increase of yarn count. The yarn of 8 lb/spindle had been found to be the most uniform in respect of the mass variation and its fibers also appeared to be finer than those of other yarns and obviously finer fiber being more in number increased the cohesive force of fibers and inter fiber content ultimately was found to increase tensile strength.

Objectives:

1.To measure the physico-mechanical properties of the fiber and yarn

2.To find out the fiber entities in the yarn.

Methodology:

Samples of different counts of yarn collected from Adamjee Jute Mills Ltd. Dhaka Jute Mills Ltd. and Experimental Mills TRC, BJRI Dhaka. The counts of the yarn were measured by taking the weight in pound of 14,400 yards of the yarn. Specimen of yarn 20 inches long were selected and breaking strength was measured using Good Brand Tensile Strength Tester and expressed in pounds. 100 individual yarn pieces tested to obtain the average breaking strength of a yarn. After the tensile strength test each test specimen was weighed and the average mass was found out. Thereafter yarn piece of 20 inch long were selected and the mass was measured using a sensitive electrical balance and the average mass was determined. The twist of the yarn was determined with the help of a Herbert Stein Twist Tester and TPI was found out. The numbers of fibers of fracture zone and at place other than fracture were measured by spreading the fibers over a sheet of wood covered with black velvet. Half an inch of length of yarn was marked and fibers were pulled. Again half inch of length was marked, the fibers were pulled out and their lengths were measured. The fiber in the first half was rejected to ensure that the lengths of fibers were measured from the leading ends. The diameter of different places along the length of the test specimen yarns as well as fibers were then determined with the help of Projection Microscope. The fiber bundle strength was measured by Pressley Bundle strength in standard room temperature and humidity conditions.

Achievement/Findings:

The results reveal that all the yarn contain more jute at other fracture zone by 55.56%, 31.25%, 31.25%, 29.03%, 25%, 66%, 93.94% and 32.69% respectively. There were no thick and thin places in yarns or in the other words if the yarn were uniform the breaking strength would be higher and consequently the quality of the yarn would also be higher. So, the yarn no. 8 appears to be more uniform in respect of mass variation and its fiber appears to be finer than those of other yarns. The average length of the fibers in yarn no. 6 is less than those of other yarn number and as such it is likely to be relatively weak due to decrease area of inter fiber contact. But as the fibers of yarn no 8 are finer and more in number than the other yarn numbers, the cohesive force of fibers and area of inter-fiber contact has increased its tensile strength.
