Studies on the Bulking Behabiour of Two Sweet Potato Varieties

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at BARI Joydebpur during 2006-2007 to find out suitable time of harvest for getting maximum economic yield of sweet potato having desirable size. Harvesting was done at 15 days interval started from 65 DAP. BARI SP-6 and BARI SP-7 were included in this study. Weight of tubers was increased with the increment of time. The sharp increase in weight of tuber occurred from 110 DAP to 125 DAP. That is the bulking rate in this stage was highest. After that bulking rate was vary low. Therefore, both of the varieties could be harvested earlier i.e. at 120-125 DAP.

Objectives:

To study the bulking behaviour of two sweet potato varieties at different stages of crop growth.

Methodology:

The study was carried out at Joydebpur during 2006-07. A split plot design was adopted with four replications. There were two main plot treatments consisting of two varieties viz. BARI SP-6 and BARI SP -7 Each main plot had six subplots of 3.0 × 2.4 m of size a accommodating 40 Plants in each sub-Plot. The experiment was set up on November 17.2006 and harvesting was according to treatment. During the crop growth Plant samples were collected at random in six different stages at 15 days intervals, commencing form 65 days after Planting (DAP) and continued up to 140 DAP. Length of main vine and weight of vine was recorded at each stage of harvest. Yield components viz. Number of tuber per Plant, individual tuber weight and weight of tubers per plant were recorded at each stage of harvest. The crop was fertilized as per recommendation.
