Comparative Studies on Different Properties Between Jute Prayer Mat and Synthetic Prayer Mat.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experimental investigation for the production of jute prayer mat and synthetic prayer mat has been conducted. In this investigation a laboratory type spinning, weaving and printing machinery were used. A good number of experiments were carried out for finding out the optimum physical parameters such as tensile strength, abrasion resistance, thickness and softness of the prayer mats. Some color fastness properties such as washing fastness, light fastness, rubbing fastness etc were also tested. Special type of fabric was woven using 100% jute yarns in both warp and weft. It was modified, raised, printed using a composite design like Mughol art. Finally, the jute prayer was made. Than different types of physical and color fastness properties of jute prayer mat and synthetic prayer mat were tested. It was observed that the properties of jute prayer mats were similar to synthetic prayer mat.

Objectives:

Prayer mats are used in every day life for the Muslims. But most of the prayer mats found in the market are made in Turkey and Pakistan. So this are not free from health hazards. This are costly also. On the other hand, jute is a natural fibre. So jute prayer mat has no bad effect, i.e. it is fully free from health hazards. Jute prayer mats are cheaper than the synthetic one. Due to its environmental friendly and other mentioned properties, people will be benefited if the diversified uses of prayer mat increase in the country.

Methodology:

A) Collection of yarn: 4 lbs/spy. (2 ply), 30 Kgs yarn was collected from the experimental spinning mill of BJRI for making warp beam. B) Preparation of warp beam: A warp beam of 150 yds was prepared with the help of beaming machine in the weaving department. C) Weaving: For weaving the fabric, a normal tappet power loom was used. The following types of weft yarns were used to produce fabric for making prayer mat. i) 2 meters of yellow fabric was produced using 2 plied yarns of 12 lbs/spy. ii) 10 meters of fabric were produced using single yarn of 14 lbs/spy. iii) 40 meters of of fabric were produced using single yarn of 15 lbs/spy. iv) 3 meters of of fabric were produced using the woolenized yarn of blue colour. D) Printing of fabric: After the weaving of fabric, the fabric was printed. For printing the fabric at first the printing paste was made using binder. Than the screen was made according to the requirement. Finally the fabric was printed. Than the printed fabric was cured by curing process. E) Finishing of jute prayer mat: The printed prayer were finished by using colored jhalor in both sides. F) Collection of synthetic prayer mat: The synthetic prayer mat was collected from new market, Dhaka.

Achievement/Findings:

Successful development of jute prayer mat will increase the diversified use of jute in home and abroad. It will be possible to know the particular type of fabric for an appropriate sector. The diversified use of fabric will earn the huge amount of foreign currency also.
