Influence of Seed Ageing on Growth and Yield of Soybean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out to at BARI, Joydebpur to evaluate the effect of seed ageing in determining stand establishment, growth and yield of three soybean varieties. The treatments included three varieties viz., (Sohag, Bangladesh Soybean 4 and BARI Soybean 5) with four levels of seed ageing (20, 12, 8 & 2 months). Germination and field emergence percent decreased but electrical conductivity of seed leachate increased with increasing the seed age in all the soybean varieties. Germination and field emergence in Bangladesh soybean 4 remained 90 and 69 % till 12 months aged seed. Individual plant from 20 months aged seed accumulated more dry matter but crop growth rate (CGR) was lower than other ageing treatment across the varieties. The highest dry matter accumulation and CGR was found in BARI soybean 5 and lowest in Bangladesh soybean 4. Seed yield and yield components varied significantly due to seed ageing. Number of pods/plant and seed weight /plant increased with increasing the seed ageing while plants /m² decreased with increasing the seed ageing regardless of varieties. The highest seed yield (2228 kg/ha) obtained in BARI soybean 5 which was grown from 2 months aged seed and the lowest (529 kg/ha) from the same variety that were grown from 20 months aged seed. Results revealed that 2 to 12 months aged seeds did not affect significantly in seed yield of Bangladesh soybean 4.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of seed ageing in determining stand establishment, growth and yield of three soybean varieties.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Central Research Farm, BARI, Joydebpur Gazipur during rabi 2006-07. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with three replications. Four levels of seed ageing viz. A₁(20 months), A₂ (13 months), A₃ (8 months) and A₄ (2 months) were placed in the main plot and three varieties viz. V₁ (sohag), V₂(Bangladesh soybean 4) and V₃ (BARI soybean 5) were placed in the subplot. It was mentioned that properly dried seeds (7.5-8% seed moisture) were stored in tin container under ambient condition, which were produced at rabi 2004-05, kharif II 2005, rabi 2005-06 and kharif II 2006, respectively. The size of each plot was 3m x 2.1 m. Irrespective of ageing levels, seed rate for Sohag and BARI soybean 5 was 60 kg/ha and Bangladesh soybean 4 was 40 kg/ha. Seeds were sown with a spacing of 30 cm X 5 cm on 11 December 2006. Seed germination (%) and leachate conductivity of the seeds were tested prior to sowing and field emergence (%) was counted at 10 days after sowing (DAS). For electrical conductivity measurements, seed leachate were made by soaking 100 seed in de-ionized water and kept 24 hours. The experimental plots were fertilized @ 30-35-50-20 kg NPKS/ha in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash and gypsum. Half of urea and full dose of other fertilizers were applied as basal. The rest of urea was applied at 39 days after sowing (DAS). Experimental field was irrigated following post sowing, at 17, 37 and 80 DAS. Weeding and mulching were done at 30 DAS. Ripcord was sprayed to control hairy caterpillar and pod borer at 10 days interval from vegetative to pod development stage. Five plants were collected randomly from each plot at different growth stages for growth analysis. Different plant parts were partitioned and oven dried and then weighed. At maturity, yield components were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants from each plot and plot yield was recorded. Sohag and BARI soybean 5 were harvested on 18 April, 2007 and Bangladesh soybean 4 harvested on 22 April, 2007. Data were analyzed statistically the means were separated by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

The highest seed yield (2228 kg/ha) was obtained from BARI soybean 5 which was grown from 2 months aged seeds the lowest (529 kg/ha) from the same variety that were grown from 20 months aged seed. Results revealed that 2 to 12 months aged seeds did not affect significantly in seed yield of Bangladesh soybean-4.
