An experiment at BARI, Joydebpur was conducted to find out the appropriate cutting time for maize to produce maximum fodder yield and its effect on the quality of the fodder. There were 3 varieties such Mohar, BARI hybrid maize 3 (BHM 3) and BARI hybrid maize 5 (BHM 5) and four cutting time, viz 40, 60, 80 & 100 days after sowing (DAE). The leaf number per plant and fodder yield varied significantly among the maize varieties. Regardless of cutting time, BARI hybrid maize 3 produced the highest fodder yield (35.41 t/ha) which was identical with BARI hybrid maize 5 (34.65 t/ha). Mohar produced the lowest yield (28.23 t/ha). Cutting time significantly influenced on plant height, leaf number per plant, fresh weight per plant, fodder yield and dry matter per 100 g fresh weight irrespective of varieties. The highest fodder yield (59.77 t/ha) was obtained from cutting at 100 days after sowing, Significantly the lowest fodder yield was obtained from cutting at 40 DAS. Similar trend was also observed for all other parameters. Influence of variety and cutting time showed that BARI hybrid maize 3 (BHM 3) produced the highest fodder yield (63.79 t/ha) cutting at 100 days after sowing which was identical with that of BARI hybrid maize 5 (60.33 t/ha) at same cutting time. The concentration (g/100g dry matter) of organic matter (OM) and acid detergent fiber (ADF) increased significantly with the decrease in ash and crude protein (CP) content through advancing the cutting time. The results indicated that fodder production for all the varieties up to 60 days after sowing was superior in quality in respect of CP and ADF content. Moreover, the variety BHM 3 and Mohar could be grown up to 80 DAS for maximum fodder yield and better quality in terms of ash, OM, ADF and CP concentration

To find out the appropriate cutting time for maximum fodder yield as well as better quality.

The experiment was conducted at the Central Research Farm, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2006-07. The experiment was laid out in a split plot design with four replications. Three maize varieties viz. Mohar, BARI hybrid maize 3 (BHM 3) and BARI hybrid maize 5 (BHM 5) were adopted in the main plot and four cutting time viz. 40 DAS (days after sowing), 60 DAS, 80 DAS and 100 DAS in the sub plot. The unit plot size was 4.5 m x 3 m. Seeds were sown on 6 December, 2006 with a spacing of 40 cm x 20 cm. The experimental plots were fertilized @ 80-26-33-20-2 NPKS Zn/ha for composite (Mohar) and @ 166-120-120-40-5 NPKSZn/ha for hybrid maize (BHM 3 and BHM 5) in the form of urea, triple super phosphate, muriate of potash, gypsum and zinc sulphate. Half of urea and all other fertilizers were applied as basal. The rest half of urea was top dressed at 53 DAS. Experimental field was irrigated following post sowing, at 22 DAS and 52 DAS, respectively. Mulching and weeding were done at 32 DAS. The fodder was harvested as per cutting treatment and fodder yield was taken from whole plot. Five plant samples were collected from each plot, partitioned into different components and oven dried for calculating dry matter followed by chemical component analysis. Chemical component estimation for fodder quality was done at Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) Laboratory. Data on yield and yield components were analyzed statistically and means were adjusted by Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

The concentration (g/100g dry matter) of ash and crude protein significantly decreased but organic matter and acid detergent fiber (ADF) increased with advancing the cutting time in all the varieties. The results indicated lower nutrient value of fodder harvested at 80 to 100 days after sowing. From the study it might seems that BHM 3 and Mohar could be grown up to 80 DAS for higher fodder yield and nutrient concentration.
