Characterization and genetic variability in 98 accessions of bottle gourd (Lagenaria vulgaris) were studied. All accessions showed variation in qualitative and quantitative characters. Variability was found in fruit shape, pre-dominant fruit skin color, secondary fruit skin colour, plant vigor, stem pubescence, leaf colour, leaf size, depth of leaf lobes on leaf margin, leaf pubescence on dorsal and ventral part, fruit firmness, seed size, seed colour and flower colour. The maximum variation was observed in fruit shape such as pyriform 72.45% (accessions), globular 15.31%, elongate form 6.12%, crooked neck 5.10% and elliptical elongate1.02% followed by pre-dominant fruit skin colour such as light cream 5.10%, cream 27.55%, light green 4.08%, green 61.23% and dark green 2.04%. Leaf color showed light green 10.20%, green 78.57% and dark green 11.23%. All accessions showed viny growth habit, branched tendril, angular stem, reinform leaf shape and dented leaf margin. The maximum coefficient of variation (45%) was obtained from the number of fruits per plant followed by total number of female flower per plant (31.85%), number of primary branch per plant (29.30%) and fruit length (26.71%).

The experiment was conducted at the Plant Genetic Resources Center, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2002-2003. Ninety-eight (98) accessions of bottle gourd collected from different districts were used in this study. The seeds were sown in polythene bags on 5 November, 2003. After 15 days, the seedlings were transplanted in prepared pits in the field. Pit to pit and line to line distance was 4 X 4m. The experiment was conducted in Alfa-lattice design with three replications. After land preparation, cow dung-10kg, Urea- 50g, TSP-200g and MP-150g, Gypsum-75g were applied in each pit and mixed thoroughly. In vegetative stage, 20g urea with water was sprayed per pit. Insectcide Sevin (2g/l) was used as for controlling insects. Normal cultivation techniques, intercultural operations and irrigations were followed to grow the crop. Observations were recorded on nineteen (19) qualitative and eleven (12) quantitative traits as per IBPGR cucurbitaceae descriptor.

Nineteen qualitative characters were studied on 98 accessions. The maximum variation was observed in the character of fruit shape such as pyriform, globular, elongate form, crooked neck and elliptical elongate. Among the total accessions (98 acc.) 72.45% pyriform (71 acc.), 15.31% globular (15 acc.), 6.12% elongate form (6 acc.), 5.10% crooked neck (5 acc.) and 1.02% elliptical elongate (1 acc.) followed by pre-dominant fruit skin colour such as light cream, cream, light green, green and dark green. These were 5.10% light cream (5 acc.), 27.55% cream (27 acc.), 4.08% light green (4 acc.) 61.23% green (60 acc.), 2.04% dark green (2 acc). Leaf color showed 10.20% light green in 10 acc., green 78.57% in 77 acc. and dark green 11.23% in 11 acc.; leaf lobes viz shallow 24.49% in 24 acc., medium 71.43% in 70 acc. and deep 4.08% in 4 acc.; secondary fruit skin colour viz absent 11.23% in 11 acc. light cream 10.20% in 10 acc.; cream 77.55% in 76 acc. and light green 1.02% in 1 acc. In flower colour 92.86% white in 91 acc. and creamy-white 7.14% in 7 acc. In seed colour 37.76% orange-white in 37 acc. and 62.24% grayed-orange in 61 acc. All accessions showed viny growth habit, branched tendril, angular stem, reinform leaf shape and dented leaf margin. The highest coefficient of variation (45%) was obtained from the number of fruit per plant followed by total number of female flower per plant (31.85%), number of primary branch per plant (29.30%) and fruit length (26.71%). In bottle gourd, six accessions were selected based on number of fruit per plant. The selected accessions were- MO-26, AEMM-562, MO26/2, MH-288, AEMM-484 and MR-102. Finally, the seeds were preserved in active and base collections for future utilization.
