Efficacy of Fungicides in Controlling Leaf Spot and Vine Rot of Pointed Gourd

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The highest disease severity was recorded from control followed by Tilt-250 EC (0.05%), Cupravit (0.25%), Dimethomorph (0.2%), Ridomil M-Z (0.2% and Dithane M-45 0.20%), respectively.There was no significant difference between the treatments Cupravit and Tilt-250 EC in case of disease severity. All the treatments produced significantly higher yield over control except Tilt 250 EC. Considering all the characters, it was found that Dimethomorph (0.2%) gave the best results.

Objectives:

To evaluate some selected fungicides against vine rot and leaf spot of pointed gourd under natural epiphytotic conditions.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at RARS, Jessore during 2002-2003. Vines were planted on December 26, 2001. The experimental design was RCB with four replications. The unit plot size was 4m x 3m. The vine was planted with a spacing of 2m x 1.5m. Recommended doses of fertilizers were used. Intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. Fungicides were sprayed 4 times at an interval of 15 days commencing form the appearance of disease symptoms. Disease severity was recorded on the basis of (0-5) scoring scale. Five fungicides namely T₁ = Ridomil MZ (02%), T₂ = Dithane M-45 (0.25%), T₃ = Cupravit (0.25%) T₄ = Dimethomorph (0.2%) and T₅ = Tilt- 250 EC (0.05%) were sprayed to the plot. One treatment was kept as control (T₆). The pointed gourd was harvested from second week of April to August. Data on disease severity, number of pointed gourd/plant, weight of pointed gourd/plant, size/pointed gourd (cm2) and yield kg/ha) were taken from both sprayd and untreated/control plots.

All the fungicides used were found to reduce the disease severity significantly over control. The highest disease severity was recorded from control followed by Tilt-250 EC (0.05%), Cupravit (0.25%), Dimethomorph (0.2%), Ridomil M-Z (0.2% and Dithane M-45 0.20%), respectively. The lowest disease severity was recorded from Dithane M-45. There was no significant difference between the treatments Cupravit and Tilt-250 EC in case of disease severity. The highest number of pointed gourd was recorded from Dimethomorph. In case of weight of pointed gourd, the maximum weight was obtained from Dimethomoph followed by Ridoil MZ and Dithane M-45. The highest pointed gourd size was sound in Dithane M-45 treated plot. All the treatments produced significantly higher yield over control except Tilt 250 EC. Considering all the characters, it was found that Dimethomorph (0.2%) gave the best results.
