Observational Trial of Root Characters of Lentil Varieties Under Rainfed Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of the Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2006-07 to identify the most suitable varieties and also to understand the root dynamics of lentil under rainfed condition. Four lentil varieties (BARI masur-1, BARI masur-2, BARI masur-3 and BARI masur-4) were included in this study as treatment variables. Root length density, root volume and root dry weight varied greatly among varieties. BARI masur -4 and BARI masur–1 exerted more root length upto 20 cm depth of the soil. These two varieties also showed greater root volume and root dry weight. Though grain yield/ha of lentil was not significantly varied but BARI masur-4 gave the highest grain yield (1177 kg/ha) followed by BARI masur-1 (1095 kg/ha). The lowest grain yield was obtained from BARI masur-2 (958 kg/ha) under rainfed condition.

Objectives:

To identify the most suitable varieties and also to understand the root dynamics of lentil under rainfed condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) research farm Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2006-07. The soil was silty clay loam in texture belonging to Chhiata series under AEZ-28. The crop received 49 mm rainfall and it was occurred during pod filling stage. The monthly mean maximum air temperature was 29.85°C and the minimum of 10.60°C. Initial soil moisture was 14.34% in 0-15 cm depth, 18.98% in 15-30 cm depth and 21.52% in 30-45 cm depth. The average soil moisture up to 45 cm depth was 11.52 cm. Four lentil varieties (BARI masur-1, BARI masur-2, BARI masur-3 and BARI masur-4)) were used as treatment variables and laid out in a RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 3m x 3m. Plots were fertilized @ 20-17.6-16.6-30 kg N, P, K and S /ha. All fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation. Seeds were sown on November 9, 2006 in lines at 30cm distance and plant spacing of 5 cm maintained by thinning. Intercultural operations such as thinning, weeding and plant protection measures were done as and when required. Soil moisture up to 45 cm depths was recorded at 15 day intervals from 15 to 60 DAE and at harvesting time. Root collection up to 20 cm depths was done up to 60 DAE at 15 days interval. Root length was computed by the interception method described by Newman (1966). Root length density (RLD) was measured as RLD = Rl/Sv cm cm-3. Where, Rl = length of root (cm), Sv = volume of soil sample (cm³) = ?r2h; r =radius of the core and h = height of the sample (cm). After 60 DAE, heavy rainfall was occurred (49 mm). So, at 60 DAE root volume and root dry weight were recorded for getting data under rainfed condition. At maturity, plant population, soil moisture and the yield attributes were recorded. An area of 4m² was harvested for yield determination from the center of each plot avoiding the boarder effect. Harvesting was done on February 26, 2006. Data thus collected were subjected to analysis of variance and LSD value was used for mean separation.

Achievement/Findings:

Though grain yield/ha of lentil was not significantly varied but BARI masur-4 gave the highest grain yield (1177 kg/ha) followed by BARI masur-1 (1095 kg/ha). The lowest grain yield was obtained from BARI masur-2 (958 kg/ha) under rainfed condition. From the study, it may be concluded that under rainfed situation, BARI Musur-4 performed better compared to the other tested varieties.
