Effect of Soil Tilling Depths on Jute Fibre Yield.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted in Central Research Station (CRS), Manikganj and Regional Jute Research Station, Faridpur and Chandina during the year 2009-11. Since no study have been reported till now for the effect of ploughing depth on fibre production, it is justified to take a study on the aspect.Two Jute varieties (O-72 and CVL-1) were used in the all locations. It is seen that the fibre and stick yielded more for tilling depth greater equal 25 cm and 15-18 cm in comparison to less equal 12 cm which is normally done by power tiller and indigenous methods. Since at the time of sowing jute crop there was a problem of soil moisture (delaying precipitation) and seed germination percentages were extremely low, the result obtained are not statistically significant, but in general the differences of fibre as well as stick production showed huge differences for soil tilling depths.

Methodology:

Types of ploughing: 3 i) By power tiller ii) By Offset disc harrow and iii) by rotavator/cultivator Jute varieties: 2 i) Capsularis (cv. CVL-1) ii) Olitorius (cv. O-72) Land area: 21.0 m X 19.5 m, Ploughing will be conducted by three different plough with each of 21.0 m X 6.5 m land in each block. 0.066 Ha each for 3 types of ploughing Design: Split Plot Design with 3 replication.

The most important consideration in soil management is the correct application of Ploughing and relation between the soil and the crops to be grown. So well ploughing of jute field is an important pre-requisite for good fibre production. Jute plant extracts nutrients from deeper layer of the soil in comparison to the other field crops. But for normal cases of ploughing by power tiller or by indigenous method, not more than 10 to 12 cm depth of soil could be pulverized. As it widely practiced throughout the country it hinders the jute plant in extinction of nutrients from deeper layer of soil. It is possible to plough the soil up to the depth of 25 cm by rotavator/ cultivators. Disc harrows can reach up to the depth of 15 to 18 cm, whereas by power tiller or indigenous method it is not possible to pulverize the soil beyond the depth of 12 cm. It is seen from the table 3 that both fibre and stick yielded more for tilling depth ≥25 cm and 15-18 cm in comparison to ≤12 cm which is normally done by power tiller and indigenous methods.
