Effect of Different Treating Agents for Controlling of Post Harvest Fruit Rot of Banana

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effect of different treating agents for controlling fruit rot of banana was evaluated at plant pathology laboratory of BARI. Seven different treating agents including two fungicides viz. viz Ethanol, Clorox, SOPP (Sodium Ortho Phenyl Phenate), NaCl, Detergent, Cupravit and Bavistin were tested. All the treatments performed remarkably better than control. Bavistin treatment retained yellowish green peel for ten days and increased self life up to 15 days without any disease infection. Among the dealings, detergent treatment was found to be best in terms of reduction of disease incidence, improvement of fruit quality, extend of self life as well as no risk of end user.

Objectives:

To control fruit rot of banana as well as for proper ripening with extended self life.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Plant Pathology Laboratory, BARI. One variety namely Sabri was selected for the study. Seven different treating agents viz Ethanol (5%), Clorox(5%), SOPP (Sodium Ortho Phenyl Phenate) (2%), NaCl (2%), Detergent (5%), Cupravit (0.05%) and Bavistin (0.05%) for three minutes were used for treatment for two minutes. Only the fruit rot caused by Colletotrichum gloeosporioides were considered during the study. Data on number of rotted fruit including fruit quality after application treatment were recorded. In vitro study on viability and germination of the causal agent were studied.

Achievement/Findings:

In the present study no disease incidence were found after treating with different agents. Clorox treated finger showed more soften pulp than Ethanol. Peel of SOPP treated finger turned to black due to chemical injury without affecting internal pulp. In case of Brine treatment it was found very soft internal pulp after ten days. Banana finger treated with Detergent showed better in all parameters specially it’s ripening color, pulp softness and extended shelf life. Cupravit treatment gave very soften pulp compared to Bavistin after ten days. Treatment with Bavistin retained yellowish green peel for ten days and increased self life up to 15 days without any disease infection. Though Bavistin treatment was found best but considering all parameters including health risk and toxic residue it can be concluded that banana finger treated with Detergent yielded best in all aspects. In vitro study revealed that all the agents suppressed conidial germination.
