Characterization of Indian Spinach

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Eleven characters were studied on 34 accessions of Indian spinach (Basella alba L.). The accessions showed variations under individual character. The variations were observed in growth habit, stem colour, leaf color, leaf shape, vein colour on the ventral side of leaf and leaf thickness. Stem colour was found, light green for 26 acc., purple for 7 acc. and dark purple for 1 acc. Two types of variations were found in leaf colour viz green for 32 acc. and dark green for 2 acc; leaf shape viz long heart shape for 25 acc. and heart shape for 9 acc. The highest coefficient of variation was obtained from number of primary branch per plant (34.36%) followed by width of leaf (19.51%). The lowest CV was observed in days to edible stage (7.06%).

Objectives:

(i) To study the genetic variability

(ii) To identify salient features that distinguish accessions from one another

(iii) To identify the promising accessions for varietal development

(iv) To increase seeds for conservation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Plant Genetic Resources Center, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during 2003-2004. Thirty-four accessions of Indian spinach collected from different districts in Bangladesh were used in this study. The seeds were sown in the field on 26 March 2004. Pit to pit and line to line distance was 4m X 3m. The experiment was conducted in Alfa-lattice design with three replications. Normal cultivation techniques, intercultural operations and irrigations were followed to grow the crop. Observations were recorded as per IBPGR’s descriptor.

Achievement/Findings:

Six qualitative characters were studied for 34 accessions. The variations were observed in growth habit, stem colour, leaf color, leaf shape, vein colour on the back of leaf and leaf thickness. Growth habit was found upright for 19 acc., intermediate for 11 acc. and spread for 4 acc. Stem colour was found, light green for 26 acc., purple for 7 acc. and dark purple for 1 acc. Two types of variations were found in leaf colour viz green for 32 acc. and dark green for 2 acc;, leaf shape viz long heart shape for 25 acc. and heart shape for 9 acc; and vein colour on the back of leaf viz light green for 33 acc. and dark purple for 1 acc. Leaf thickness was observed thin for 10 acc, medium for 13 acc. and thick for 11 acc. The highest standard deviation was found in days to edible stage (2.66) and the lowest in stem diameter (0.62). The highest CV was obtained from number of primary branch per plant (34.36%) followed by width of leaf (19.51%). The lowest CV was observed in days to edible stage (7.06%). The plant has attained eighty-eight (88) days and the crop condition appears luxuriant and excellent.
