Development of Management Practice for Corm Rot of Gladilus

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at Navaron, Jhikorgacha, for development of a management practice for corm rot of Gladiolus, which is a major threat for gladiolus farmers. Nine treatments applied here, where five applied singly, three integrated and one is Trichoderme. Among the treatments T₅ = (Poultry refuse 1.5t/ha + Provax 2gm/l) performed better than others. here Provax used as corm treating fungicide before corm planting, and Poultry refuse applied to the soil 21 days before planting of corm.

Objectives:

To control the corm rot of gladilus pathogen by different soil treatments

Methodology:

This experiment was conducted at a farmer’s field located Navaron, Jhikorgacha and laid out in RCB design with three replications. The unit plot size was 2 m x 2 m. The distance of plot to plot, plant to plant, row to row, replications to replication were 1m, 25cm, 25cm and 1 meter respectively. The corms were supplied by the farmers. Date of planting was 15 November 2010. Recommended doses of chemical fertilizer were applied in the experimental plot. Intercultural operations such as irrigation, mulching and weeding were done by the farmer as when necessary. Ten treatments were applied namely: T₁ = Provax (2.5 g/kg), T₂ = Poultry refuse (1.5 t/ha), T₃ = Mustard oil cake (1 t/ha), T₄= Neem oil cake (300 kg/ha), T₅ = T₁ + T₂, T₆ = T₁ + T₃, T₇ = T₁ + T₄, T₈ = Bavistin, T₉ = Trichoderma, T₁₀= Control. Where Provax, Bavistin and Trichoderma mixed with corm before planting and poultry refuse, mustard oil cake applied to the soil before 21 days of planting. Control plots were sprayed by distilled water. The observation of disease incidence was done up to the last stage of flowering when the flowers were drying. After cutting the flower corm were left at the field for another month. Then the corm and cormel were up taken from the soil and number and weight of infected corms were taken.

Achievement/Findings:

Number of germinated corms was higher in T₇ (Pro + Noc) 63.67 and T₈ (Bavistin) 63.67 (table 105.) which were statistically similar with T₄ (Neem oil cake) 63.33, T₅ (Provax + PR) 63.33 and T₉ (Trichoderma) 62.33. It is lowest in control plot 60.00 and statistically similar with T₁ (Provax) 61.00, T₂ (PR) 61.67, T₃ (MOC) 61.33 and T₆ (T₁ + T₃) 61.67. The highest number of infected corms was recorded in control plot 14.00, statistically similar with T₁ (Provax) treated plot 11.67. The lowest number of infected corm was recorded in T₅(Provax + PR), 3.33 followed by T₂, T₃, T₈ & T₉ which are statistically similar. In case of weight of infected corms control plot perform highest result (.61 kg). It was lowest in T₅ (.18 kg) and statistically similar all the treatments except T₁.
