Response of rainfed lentil (cv. BARI masur-4) to method of sowing and fertilizer placement was evaluated during the winter season of 2005-06 at Joydebpur, Gazipur. Sowing methods and fertilizer placement significantly influenced soil water depletion from the root profile and water expense efficiency (WEE). Significantly higher grain yield (1482 kg/ha) and WEE (221 kg/ha/cm) were obtained by drilling of seeds and placing fertilizer in the moist sub - surface in - between furrows as against yield (1062 kg/ha) and WEE (173 kg/ha/cm) through broadcasting seeds and fertilizer at Joydebpur.

To determine the effect of sowing methods and placement of fertilizers on the stand establishment, water use efficiency and yield of lentil under rainfed condition.

Field experiment was carried out during the rabi season of 2005-06 at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute Farm, Joydebpur, Gazipur. The soil of Joydebpur farm was silty clay loam with a pH 6.4 containing 1.04% organic matter, 0.036% total nitrogen, 8.02 ppm phosphorus, 0.16 meq/100 g soil exchangeable K and 10 ppm sulphur, respectively. Rainfall was not occurred during the experimental period. The mean maximum and minimum day temperature of this location were 34.2 and 4.80C during the period of the study. The treatments compared were: T1) broadcast sowing and broadcast fertilizer at the time of final land preparation, T2) broadcast sowing and fertilizer placed at 30 cm apart with 10 cm depth, T3) drill sowing and fertilizer broadcast, T4) drill sowing and fertilizer placed in the same furrow in moist sub - surface, T5) drill sowing and fertilizer placed in adjacent furrow, T6) drill sowing and fertilizer P placed in same furrow and other fertilizer broadcast at the time of final land preparation, T7) Seed and fertilizer broadcast plus 5 ton cowdung/ha and T8) broadcast sowing without fertilizer. The experiment was laid in a randomized complete block design with three replications. The size of each plot was 5 m x 3m. The inoculated seeds @30 kg/ha of lentil variety BARI masur-4 sown on 14 November, 2005 in both the location. A single seed drill was used for sowing lentil seeds continuously at a depth of 10 cm in rows 30 cm apart. Fertilizers were applied at the time of sowing at the rate of 20–18-20-30 kg/ha NPKS in the form of Urea. TSP, MP and Gypsum, respectively. In broadcast method, full amount of fertilizers were broadcast before last ploughing followed by broadcasting of seeds and laddering. In fertilizer placement methods, fertilizers were mixed and placed in the furrow (10 cm depth) through a funnel attached to a country plough. In case of placement in adjacent furrows, the fertilizers were mixed and placed in between in the furrows (rows) which were 30 cm apart at a depth of 10 cm. In case of T2, the entire quantity of fertilizer was mixed and placed in furrows 30 cm apart at a depth of 10 cm and then seeds were broadcasted followed by laddering. A light irrigation by sprinkler system was given after sowing seeds for uniform emergence and then the experiment was carried under rainfed condition on conserved moisture. Soil moisture was determined gravimetrically at sowing and at harvest. Soil samples were collected 15 cm depth interval from each plot upto a depth of 45 cm. Total water expense was computed as the sum of rainfall and profile water depletion during the growing season. The crop was harvested on February 26, 2006. Data on yield components were recorded from 15 plants taken from each plot at random. Grain yield of lentil was recorded from an area of 8 m2 avoiding border. Data on different parameters were subjected to analysis of variance and the treatment means were compared by LSD test.
