Reactions of Bt. Transgenic and Non Bt. Brinjal Lines to Root-knot Nematodes

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nine Bt transgenic varieties/line (Chaga, Dohazari, ISD 006, Islampuri, Kazla, Khotkhotia, Nayantara, Singnath and Uttara) along with their corresponding non Bt varieties/lines were evaluated to assess their susceptibility to root-knot nematode at 7 locations viz. Joydebpur, Jamalpur, Jessore, Burirhat, Rangpur, Ishurdi, Hathazari, Chittagong and Rahmatpur, Barisal. From the present study it can be concluded that most of the Bt transgenic lines enhanced the susceptibility to root-knot nematode infestation compared to non Bt brinjal varieties/lines.

Objectives:

To compare the BT and non BT brinjal varieties/lines in relation to root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita) disease.

Methodology:

Seven experiments with Bt transgenic and non Bt transgenic brinjal lines were conducted by Biotechnology Division, BARI at 7 locations namely, Joydebpur, RARS Jamalpur, Ishurdi, Jessore, Hathazari, Rahmatpur and ARS Burirhat, Rangpur. They were evaluated of their susceptibility to root-knot nematodes, during the Kharif season of 2010-11. The assessments were conducted at natural condition, i.e., without the addition of nematodes inocula to the experimental soils. The root-knot disease severity was assessed by gall indexing at plant harvesting stage according to Zeck (1971).

At Joydebpur, Gazipur nine Bt transgenic varieties/lines (Chaga, Dohazari, ISD 006, Islampuri, Kazla, Khotkhotia, Nayantara, Singnath and Uttara) along with their corresponding non BT varieties/lines were evaluated. It was evident that all of Bt transgenic brinjal varieties/lines showed more susceptible to root-knot nematode infestation than Non Bt brinjal varieties/lines. Among the lines, Bt Islampuri showed highly susceptible than non Bt Islampuri followed by Bt ISD 06, Bt Khatkhatia and Bt Singnath b) RARS, Ishurdi In RARS, Ishurdi, the highest gall index was 4.50 recorded from the Bt Uttara and lowest in non Bt ISD 006. Comparing Bt and non Bt brinjal varieties, both Bt varieties (Bt ISD 006 and Bt Uttara) showed more susceptible to root-knot nematode than non Bt varieties. c) RARS, Jessore In Jessore, Bt Singnath showed highly susceptible to root-knot nematode than uttara. The highest gall index 7.45 was recorded from Bt Singnath and lowest gall index 1.30 from non Bt Uttara variety. Bt Uttara also showed more susceptible to root-knot nematode than non Bt Uttara. d) RARS, Rahmatpur, Barisal In Barisal, at the harvesting stage of eggplant, the highest gall index 5.23 recorded from Bt Singnath followed by Non Bt Singnath and the lowest gall index from Non Bt Chaga. e) RARS, Hathazari In Hathazari, Chittagong, root-knot nematode disease severity was higher in Bt Kazla followed by Bt ISD 006. Both Bt eggplant varieties showed more susceptible to root-knot nematode than non Bt varieties.
