Effect of Soil Treatments and Healthy and Nematode Infested Seedlings on the Control of Root-knot Nematode of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

It is observed that soil treatment with saw dust burning and use of root-knot nematode free healthy seedlings have profound effect on the yield of tomato and root-knot nematode development. The highest yield 43.17 ton/ha and the lowest gall index (0.67) was achieved from the plot received saw dust burning and healthy seedlings. The second highest yield 38.4 ton/ha was also resulted from the plot received sawdust burning but infected seedlings. The third highest yield 35.6 ton/ha was obtained from plot treated with 5% Formalin and healthy seedlings. The lowest yield 25.6 ton/ha and highest gall index (4.0) was resulted from plots received infected seedlings only. From the cost benefit ratio, It is assumed that although the soil treatment with either saw dust burning or formalin is costly, still it is profitable. The tomato production can be increased up to 68% by using sawdust burning supplemented with nematode free healthy seedlings. By using Formalin yield can be increased up to 48% above control plot.

Objectives:

To fid out the cultural practices like healthy and nematode infested seedlings on the control of root-knot disease and yield of tomato.

Methodology:

This experiment was designed to determine the effect of formalin and saw dust burning to soil and cultural practices like healthy and nematode infested seedlings on the control of root-knot disease and yield of tomato. The experiment was conducted in the experimental field of Plant Pathology Division of BARI, during 2002-03 seasons. The experimental design was simple RCBD with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 2 x 2 sq.m. There were six treatments. Root-knot nematode infected seedlings were raised in nematode sick plot. Healthy seedlings cv. Ratan was raised in seed bed where soil was previously treated with formaldehyde. Fifteen days before plantation the plots received Formalin was treated with 10 liters water containing 5% formaldehyde Immediately the soil was covered with polythene sheet for 48 hours. The plots received saw dust burning was covered with 4 cm thick saw dust uniformly and was burnt at the noon time. The seedlings were planted after 14 days following proper culture and fertilization. The seedlings were planted keeping 60 x 40 cm plant to plant and line to line distance, respectively. Seventy-five days after transplantation, five plants from each plot was uprooted randomly and washed carefully. The roots were indexed for root galls following 0-10 scale (Zech, 1971), where 0 represented roots free of galls and 10 maximum galled roots. Data on fresh shoot wt, shoot ht, root wt., were also recorded. At the time of fruit setting, total no. and wt. of fruit/plant were recorded from randomly selected five plants. The yields were converted to yield (kg)/plot and ton/ha.
