Effect of Cutting Management and Nitrogen Levels on the Fodder and Grain Yield of Barley

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at BARI farm, Gazipur, during rabi season of 2005-06 to find out the optimum nitrogen dose and suitable cutting time for higher yield of green fodder as well as grain of barley. Four cutting management (one cutting at 40 DAS; two cutting at 40 DAS and at 50% heading; one cutting at 40 DAS and left for grain production; normal grain production as control) and three nitrogen levels (60, 80, 100 kg/ha) were studied in this experiment. Fodder cutting at 40 DAS reduced 10-15% grain yield of barley but cutting at 50% heading failed to produce grain at all N levels. Barley grown with 80 kg N/ha produced significantly the highest grain yield (2.11 t/ha). Cutting at 40 DAS + at 50% heading produced more fodder yield than cutting either at 40 DAS or at 50% heading in all N levels. Application of 100 kg N/ha to barley crop and cutting fodder for twice produced the height yield (23.52 t/ha) and it was identical to 80 kg N/ha (21.89 t/ha). The highest gross return (Tk 11760/ha) and gross margin (Tk. 6580/ha) were also obtained from the same treatment and those were very close to same cutting practice with 80 kg N/ha. The results revealed that it is profitable to grow barley for fodder instead of grain and cutting at 40 DAS and at 50% heading along with 80 kg N/ha is a better cutting practice

Objectives:

The experiment was conducted to determine the cutting time with optimum N dose for higher fodder and grain yield of barley.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the farm of BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 2005-06. The soil belongs to Chhiata series with pH 6.8 under AEZ 28. The experiment consisted of 4 x 3 treatment structure involving four cutting management and three nitrogen levels (60, 80 and 100 kg N/ha). The treatment combinations were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Four cutting managements were: cutting for fodder at 50% heading, cutting for fodder at 40 DAS and 50% heading, cutting at 40 DAS and left for grain production and crop grown only for grain production. Unit plot size was 3 m x 4 m. Half of nitrogen and full dose of other fertilizers (24 kg P and 40 kg K/ha) were incorporated into the soil during final land preparation. Seeds of barley (cv. BARI Barley 6) were sown continuously in line 20 cm apart on November 30, 2005. A light irrigation was given to the crop for uniform emergence. Remaining ½ N was top-dressed in two equal splits at 20 and 40 DAS. Fodder cutting was followed by top dressing and then by irrigation. The crop was cut for green fodder leaving 6 cm at the bottom at 40 DAS and 50% heading as per treatment. First cutting delayed the crop by 10-12 days for heading and maturity. Green fodder yields were converted to t/ha. Five mature barley plants were selected randomly from each plot to collect data on yield components. The mature barley crop was harvested from whole plot on March 14, 2006 (104 DAS) for grain. The data were analyzed statistically and the means were compared using Least Significance Difference test (LSD).
